why do computers slow down over time?
my laptop is from 2009 and it's getting so fucking slow.
it was much faster brand new and im not doing anything other than the most basic of tasks
is it a harddrive issue or an OS issue? or both?
pls halp
>>53579298
Its simple.
Small files build up over time thus causing reads to take longer.
Applications become more intensive as stronger components that can handle it are released.
Your HDD is getting errors.
All hardware has a limited lifespan. It also helps to reinstall and wipe all unnecessary shit once in a while.

i was thinking of getting an ssd
should i clone and install or redo everything and go with a fresh install?
I need 4bay NAS server for home, max 350$.
Any ideas?
>>53579211
Prebuilt NAS is a meme like Prebuilt PCs.
>>53579321
I won't be able to find anything good to 350$ unless it's prebuilt.
I am checking DS416j & EX4100 right now.
>>53579321
Except the fact that they have MUCH less power draw and properly built.
Comparing NAS builds is like comparing a raspberry pi-powered android smartphone with a 1Ah battery with a clamped on touchscreen in a shitty 3d printed case to an actual smartphone.
How good is it?
>>53579187
It's so shitty that even the developer killed himself over it.
>>53579187
when a distro gets named after a GRILL-
should i countinue?
>>53579187
>no firefox
>free as in nothing works ootb
>creator heroically killed himself
>versions named after fucking Toy Story
>even servers are based on ubuntu instead of debian. RedHat/CentOs are used for stability
>workstation users are old neckbeard freetards
>no support
>goes nowhere
>"stable" as in old as fuck softwares

I am currently in the market for a new 13 or 15 inch laptop. What is currently or in the near future the best 13 or 15 inch laptop on the market?
I want a laptop with good battery life, great build quality, and performance.
I have looked at the Dell XPS, ASUS, and Razor Blade Stealth. I know Apple has new laptops coming on on Monday as well.
Any suggestions?
Have you looked into the Microsoft® Surface™ family?
Like really, the Pro 4 and the Book are excellent machines if you want premium quality.

>I know Apple has new laptops coming on on Monday
It's just phones and tablets, actually
>>53578897
I have looked at the Surface Book. I don't like the screen ratio and the hinge. The Surface Pro 4 just seems over priced for the higher end models to me.
is this a good deal for first time computer?
finally computer that not parents, /g/ usually think core 2 duo okay?
>>53578693
i'd buy it in Australia but shit is expensive here so may not actually be a good deal where you are.

What does /g/ think about bioinformatics? I am currently considering doing an MSc in Bioinformatics. I've talked with the professor in charge of the course and they apparently do a lot of programming (mostly R, Python, and Perl), statistics, and HPC stuff.

Jesus Christ when will the Touch Screen craze fucking end. I despise this technology, I got tiny delicate fingers that I am able to do a lot of precise and delicate things with yet Touch Screen is the bane of my life.
Multiple times a day I spell shit wrong, I am trying to send something and Ill hit the fucking home screen button or worse on android devices you can open up chrome randomly.
When will it fucking end? I just want a good smart phone with a keyboard and directional button.
I can't help but wonder how people with big sausage fingers manage at all....

How do I get my isp to change my ip which is static
Someone plz help, I've been trying to setup this cryptostorm VPN but I just keep getting taken on rides through forum posts that tell me that this no longer updated and you should go to this page instead, over and over.
I finally find myself at this github
https://github.com/cryptostorm/cryptostorm_client_configuration_files/tree/master/linux
what do I do with these files? I thought I needed a .conf file.
