Hey /g/, I've used IRC clients enough, but I don't understand the inner workings of IRC, or why anyone would opt to use it.
I don't get the appeal. Isn't it insecure as fuck? And having to host a server/chatbot is a pain in the ass, no?

you don't have to host a server, just use one of the many existing networks already set up. irc is a very developed ecosystem. modern irc is all about choice, in client and server.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.
There are three ways to try Linux, you can:
1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)
If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

Just received a Raspberry Pi 2, waiting on a Adafruit Perma-Proto board, DHT22 sensor, 433mhz transceiver, some IR LEDs and a PIR sensor. Intend to use it all to automate the loungeroom HTPC setup, with later expansion into automating the rest of the house (when smart bulb/adaptors come down further in price)
All projects on hold until I have spending money.
Right now focusing solely on paying bills.
