I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as GNU, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. GNU is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Linux system made useful by the Linux corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the Linux system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Linux which is widely used today is often called “GNU", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux Project. There really is a GNU and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
GNU is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. GNU is normally used in combination with the Linux operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “GNU” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as GNU/Linux is in fact GNU. Linux is not part of the operating system itself, but is the kernel that is not covered by the naming system of an operating system as defined by common sense.
Many users run operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and a variant of BSD yet do not use a cumbersome naming system that includes the kernel, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, GNU has been the exception to this for no reason and has just been called "Linux" for no good reason, and many others use the insane, cumbersome term "GNU/Linux", mostly because the GNU project doesn't want you to think that Linux is a part of GNU.
There really is a Linux, and it's not part of GNU, but it's a kernel, and no one really specifies using it. GNU is the OS; the actual base system you interact with, and is useful with any compatible kernel; it can function with many different kernels such as kFreeBSD or even GNU Mach, so the whole system should only specify the kernel when it matters, because all these kernels are really irrelevant regarding GNU.
Ok /g/ show me your smallest price/performance balanced servers.something like https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/42TwrH/priceperformance-balanced-mini-itx-home-servernas
>>54478376
That board is for relationship advice, not general advice. It's basically /r9k/ with questions.
>>54478365
>price/performance balanced
There is no answer to that. CPU performance is largely irrelevant for a home server as long as you're not running an ancient single core atom, and memory is cheap. What matters is the number of SATA and Ethernet ports, as well as other ports you may need, but all that heavily depends on your individual uses.

I use git for version control.
Let's say I use GPL-licensed code in my programs during early development before replacing it with my own code more tailored for my specific purposes.
If I then distribute my software and make the git repository available to users, does my software have to be GPL? There is no GPL-licensed code in the released version, but the repository still contains it and one could checkout a version which includes it.
It's a gray area.
I guess this is one of a few reason vendor won't give access to code during development.
Technically, it's a good practice but legal-wise it's a shitstorm.
At worst, you can create and expose to public the git containing your release code only.

Some has to ask Stallman or a good IP lawyer about this.
The GNU General Public License (GPL) and Open Sores is much like the Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and Cold Sores, after it infects the host it can only be rendered dormant but never fully eradicated.
The only way to be safe is to avoid it completely and never come in contact with it in the first place.

anyone heard anything about the Razer Core? I bought a thunderbolt 3 laptop specifically so I could buy this thing and not a peep on the internet or razer about it since march, when it was supposed to launch in april.
>>54478048
If not this, anyone have any information about other options for external graphics connected to laptops?
>>54478048
>I bought a thunderbolt 3 laptop specifically so I could buy this thing
Pretty sure the Razer Core is only going to officially work with Razer's branded laptop.
So unless you got the Razer Blade, you're shit out of luck anyway.

How the fuck does this even slip through QA? And it's for online summer course registration at a college; you'd think enough people would've tried and failed for them to realize that something is seriously borked.

I take it you don't have a job as a professional web developer, do you.

you deserve not being able to complete the form.
>>54478004
This so fucking much.
We beg and plead for more QA. Give us the time to write unit tests for the back end code, integration tests for the front end, and maybe even hire a QA guy to help automate some of that shit. But what do we get? "Nope, and push out the next project a week ahead of schedule regardless of code quality or shortcomings. We want to look good for a new prospect"
I love my job, but fucking hell it's a joke as it comes to actual development.
almost everything i've ever seen wrapped in .rar was bullshit. either some form of malware or some shit.
does /g/ use .rar for anything legit?

I keep telling people to simply use .zip instead of .rar because it is natively supported, but little do these cucks know, first thing they do after installing Windows is install winrar.
When are you getting yours /g/entoomen? Only £1900 or $2400

I do not use computer case because that is exactly what goverment wants us to do. Now brb, my tinfoil hat requires repairs.
Why did ed2k die? It's one of the handful of truly p2p networks, no hubs, content indexing servers or trackers needed.
I can understand normies moving to torrents and DDL as they're only interested in the latest summer blockbuster or Kanye album and those offer faster speeds, but those services offer no file longevity at all. It's next to impossible to find a 3 year old torrent that still has seeds on public trackers, private ones aren't much better. File hosting sites are even more volatile, it's usually pointless to check links posted more than a couple of months ago.
Meanwhile I just fired up emule and a file I uploaded ~10 years ago is still there with 4 full sources. Sure it would probably download at 5 KB/s but I would get it eventually if I really wanted it. Is that not worth anything anymore?

My micro usb cables break all the time, where can i find one thats durable and fast charging?
Monoprice is durable and very cheap (especially on their website, more expensive on Amazon sometimes). I would bet they have fast charge cables. If not, sorry, got no clue.

do what I do, buy a mountain of the cheapest ones you can find and treat them as if they're disposable.

I have an i7-6700k, will I ever need to upgrade?
give me a reason that isn't games
For general computer use? Probably not in your lifetime really.
For gaming? Maybe in a decade.
6 year old Westmere hex core xeons outperform it in multi threaded workloads.
If you want real performance for real workloads a overpriced quadcore like the 6700k is already dead on arrival
