If don't know what you're doing then yes buy a pre-built, but if you know how to build a computer and how to pick the right parts then it's 100 % better to make your own
Does /g/ know of an open patent system similar to open source software? I learned about the copyleft system, but nothing like a true open patent system that enforces universal intellectual property rather than keeping that IP in the hands of the inventors or owners. So far I have found nothing.

Well, I thought that patents were separate pieces of IP and the GPL was not applicable to them. Dunno about music.
You might want to check out the Creative Commons licenses. Specifically, the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International one seems most similar to the GPL.

/g/ I need help.
I'm using a MSI GS70 w/ I7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz. It also has a GTX 765m.
Here's a brief rundown of what's happened:
> left hinge snapped
> facia/bezel cracked
> wireless antenna broke
> removed screen
> changed thermal paste
> propped up behind monitor as a desktop pc w/ ethernet
It's developed weird lags and CPU spikes.
Pic related is my speccy and a proposed build. I'd like to still use this MSI as a PC at my dad's place.
Thoughts? Suggestions? If I can get the price even lower I'd be happy.

Hi /g/, as a birthday gift for my mom I'd like to convert our old family VHS tapes to something with more longevity. The way I figure it, I have 3 options:
1. Use our old VHS/DVD machine that has built-in conversion to make a bunch of DVDs
2. Buy a capture device and then
a. Digitize the videos onto an HDD
b. Digitize and upload the videos onto a private youtube account
DVDs would be the easiest, but archive-grade DVDs would cost me as much as two 500gb HDDs (for redundancy). I'm not sure if there are any downsides to youtube besides the time it would take to upload everything. Hoping for some feedback from anons who have done this kind of project themselves. Thanks.
