I didn't found a recent Linux for Beginners thread so here it is with me being the beginner.

I have two questions.

First of all, I have been using Linux distros on my secondary machine for a few years now for Uni and travelling. I startet with Ubuntu and currently running Mint.
Now I want to run a Linux distro also on my primary machine.
>What OS shall I use? I want to mainly Browse, watch movies/porn, write essays etc. and code just a little (but Atom is enough for me, I used it already under Windows)

Now we come to my main-problem. I have bought an Asus of the x751 series and it came with windows. The problem is, that I haven't figued out how to set firstboot to usb. I wanted to start BIOS but it seems to be running UEFI-shit to enable windows-fastboot and such. But whatever I have tried, it didn't boot from USB. (yeah, I have done that before, OS is properly installed on USB)

Hi /g/, I'm new here and habe started to become seriously interested in installing Linux. However, I don't want to install it on my rig just yet, for concerns I might fuck it up. I used GRUB to dual boot Ubintu and Win7 on my old laptop a couple years ago and I couldn't ever figure it out. So rather than risk being forced to wipe because I made a noob mistake on my main desktop I would much rather install Linux on my MacBook Air, which is currently primarily serving as a $1000 drink coaster.

So my questions are the following:

can it be done?
should I dual boot or go straight Linux?
if i should dual boot how would I go about doing that?
what linux distro should i use?
and can anyone send me links to guides or give me some instructions to help me get started?

I'd appreciate the help, I'm excited to give linux another shot

>can it be done?
yes. google your model and year + driver issues just to be sure
>should I dual boot or go straight Linux?
up to you. try to install it with bootcamp.
>if i should dual boot how would I go about doing that?
bootcamp
>what linux distro should i use?
up to you. probably noobuntu
>and can anyone send me links to guides or give me some instructions to help me get started?
no. if you can't into googling your problems, you're going to have a hard with linux.
>>
>>51769161
It can be done, but it is a bad idea. Linux has terrible driver support, so you'd have to buy an ethernet adapter or package the driver on a usb JUST to install it.

Even then things won't work correctly like suspending and resuming, webcam, gpu switching. Linux also has downright awful power management, so expect to lose 20% of your battery life even if you use a low resource WM.

It's better to run it in a VM if you're interested, that will make sure everything works as it ought to without any of the hassle.
>>
Well first of all, mac OS a unix system so commands on linux work on mac OS, what do you really need linux for? Just use a VM or get a raspberry pi 2

I thought buying pre-built was worse.

I saw this PC for $500 on newegg.
I thought building your own was better.
The pic on the right I did cost like $550.

The builds are simliar but the one on newegg has some offers that make it a little better.

Whats your opinion /g/?

Go ahead and buy that glued together console shit then OP.
>>
>>51769006
Well your own build has a proper CPU cooler, you have a quality PSU. Good GPU.
You can be certain that the prebuilt has the stock AMD dogshit cooler, cheap housefire PSU and the cheapest, shittiest 750Ti. Also maybe the HDD is a refurb.
You just don't know what's in these shitboxes until you have it right in front of you.

I am about to graduate with a BS in Computer Science. I passed my CS classes with almost a 4.0 and did alright in everything else except that chem class from hell. I feel like I know nothing. Absolutely nothing. Math. A little bit of code.. More math.. A little bit of code.. A FUCKING ASS LOAD OF MATH.. Is this normal for graduating from a tech related major. What should I know?

Anyone got any experiences with this shit?

Where do you work / what hobby projects do you have?
>>

I work web dev in a program called MIPS. It is a grant my school has that allows us to work with a company on a project. Just ended up being web dev (Symfony Framework). My hobbies before the semester went full ass kick tends to be messing with parallel computation, and I was messing with making an audio stream application in java with a friend (Complete fucking mess).
>>
>>51768909
I know what you mean. You don't really learn programming until you do it in your free time or have a side job. They are just teaching the base, and what you make from it is your duty.

Feel free to ask any /g/ meta question here.

I'll start with my thoughts.

It seems like /g/ and /vr/ like each other, but why the hate between /g/ and /v/? I'm browsing 4/g/, 8/tech/ and also 4&8/v/ and /vr/, just laughing about the wannabe *chan police.

What is this hate all about? Basically there are 2 kind of people in love with technology, - or not? What do you think.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
The problem is that /g/ is generally anti consoles, and a lot of /v/ related items are consoles. /vr/ usually uses emulators and the act of making them and maintaining them is slightly /g/ related
>>
>>51768879
How do you know a person with a phone problem is a /v/ person?
>>>/pol/
>>
>>51768879
You're right here. But that is maybe a sticky problem. I'd like to have a sticky for tech-problems and buy-recommendations like 8ch. That would remove much cancer threads.

which browser is /g/ approved?

for performance with a sprinkle of botnet, chromium.

>>

No Debianized software is /g/ approved, and neither is Debian (or anything from it).
