mine taught SVN and Synergy in first year too, when i stopped to think about it, but only about the software itself, i.e. theory, which is really pointless, you only really learn once you use it.

Since its black Friday and I think would be a good time for me to invest in a new CPU and motherboard. However I am debating whether to get a Intel i5 or a i7.
I heard alot of back and forth on articles and videos, but I was hoping you guys can give me your input. The machine will be used for gaming, obviously.

I know jack shit about this stuff but just from browsing Steam the last few days I can already see a lot of games recommending i7s. I imagine there will only be more in the future, so if the price jump isn't too bad I'd say go with that. I have an i5 I don't regret getting, but that was a couple years ago and on specs it's already starting to fall more on the 'minimum' side more than the 'recommended'.

I assume you're talking about Skylake or Haswell.
Comparing a quad i5 with a quad i7 in the same series, i7s are hyperthreaded and have more cache. i7s also run a bit faster.
Is it worth it? Depends on you and what games you want to play. Go look at some benchmarks.
Personally speaking I prefer HEDT line of i7s which now start from 6-core up.

Ive looked up some benchmarks and I seen that they show little difference in FPS all in the highest settings. What Id ont want is I dont want to buy a i5 and then it gets slow 2-3 years later ya know?

Well since an actual person is asking an actual question, let me answer this for you.
I think that you should install Linux for your nephew, I think that people of all ages should be learning about it.
I would probably install Ubuntu Minimal for your nephew and then you can configure everything, if not I recommend something like Ubuntu Gnome or Ubuntu Mint for starters.
If not, just install Windows.

I am building my first rig and would like to know why one would want a AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor vs a Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor. What does number of cores and data width have to do with performance? (Yes I know im a complete noob, some help would be much appreciated)

AMD basically has a different architecture where 2 cores make up a "unit" which shares a certain amount of cache (fast memory for the CPU to work with). An Intel quad-core is better than a comparable octa-core AMD in terms of absolute perfromance.

the 4790K definitely. it's desireable to have more cores of course (pun not intended, heh) but not if those cores are shit like on the AMD processor.
The 8350 and 4790K don't even compare. If you are willing to spend the money, it should be a no-brainer.

I'll start with a few obvious ones that people miss:
1. Use ethernet instead of wifi to avoid your laptop overheating (plus its always faster and more power efficient)
2. Never have auto-sync switched on on your smartphone (I don't even know why the fucking companies have this set by default)
3. If sites have free-to-read in HTML form but a paid-for PDF or EPUB, then hold your middle finger up and then print the page to PDF which usually makes it print-friendly and just as easy to read. (Don't actually print it though you fucking terrorist)
