I think I'm going to start collecting malware. Because Virtual Machines aren't perfect and because I like to be safe, I figure I should probably buy a cheap old laptop just for malware storing purposes - I don't want to brick my actual desktop if something escapes containment.

Any reccs for good laptops from the early 2000s, and any tips on this kind of hobby?

All the interesting bits of malware are from the 90s or the early 2000s, so I don't need anything modern.

What the fuck is my cpu? Is it good?

I have a i7 3820 @3.6GHz, everywhere I've looked seems to import it from Japan, and its like $450 new, but only $150 used. Is this even a good CPU? I can hardly find any actual information on it, and I bought this 2-3 years ago, before I had any knowledge of computers. Why is it out of stock EVERYWHERE and all of them are importing from Japan?

They only make specific models of processors for a year at most. once the next gen ramps up (or even incremental improvements) the equipment can't be used for older models. It wouldn't be profitable anyways.

Dunno if you can OC it but there's nothing wrong with it. Your mobo supports 4 channel DDR3 so basically it's a fancy i7 2600. Check for benchmarks for the 2600k or something and imagine yours being a snidge better.

relax nigga it's fine.
I question why anyone would buy an i7 and not a Xeon E3, but whatever.

Is anyone trying the Mint 18 beta? How is it?

One day after $53 million abruptly disappeared from an experimental cryptocurrency project, a note appearing to be from the attacker has surfaced on PasteBin, claiming that the money drained from the system is now legally his. The attacker withdrew the money by exploiting a contract bug in the code of the DAO (or Decentralized Autonomous Organization), a collective investment fund that uses the Ethereum cryptocurrency.

"I have carefully examined the code of The DAO and decided to participate after finding the feature where splitting is rewarded with additional ether," the note reads. "I have made use of this feature and have rightfully claimed 3,641,694 ether, and would like to thank the DAO for this reward."

"My law firm has advised me that my action is fully compliant with United States criminal and tort law."

It’s unclear whether this legal reasoning holds up, but it’s not entirely unprecedented. The DAO is structured like a legal contract, and while the attack certainly wasn’t an intended use of that contract, it proceeded according to the contract’s pre-established rules. Cornell cryptographer Emil Gün Sirer wrote yesterday that draining the funds may not even qualify as a hack.

When someone buys a new cell phone how do they know it hasn't been tampered with?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's in the original packaging and you order directly from the manufacturer
>>
>>55143847
technically there's no such thing as a "brand new" phone. Every phone goes through the physical hands of some factory worker in China to check the quality of each device before putting it back onto a conveyor belt for machines to automate packaging.
>>
>>55144011
this.

i doubt that factory workers tamper with the devices, but if you want to be sure, get an android phone and flash a fresh copy of the os before using the device.

most bootloaders are locked, so the chances that someone tampered with the radio rom as opposed to the android rom are very slim.

but this is tinfoil territory.

if you do notice that someone messed with the device you got sealed in the original packaging, you could sue the manufacturer.

so how many devices on your lan /g/?

How the fuck do you keep your cables managed neatly? I have 28 plugs plugged in and cables floating everywhere

Use clamps to group cables together. Nail them to supports if you don't want them in your way. Get rid of excess length.
>>
>>55143582
How the fuck is this difficult? Just group them together... Move them with your hands.

So I have a raspberry set up with a 2tb harddrive with 800gb of movies set up to stream to anywhere using sftp. And it works fine using VLC if VLC wan't complete shit. Is there some other media player that supports sftp? It needs to run on winshit because most people have winshit on their computer and I want to be able to go to a friends house and use his PC to stream my movies.

I met a guy online a few years ago and he really wanted to date me. He messaged and called me all the time. I wasn't disinterested but I wasn't anywhere near as interested in him as he was in me. He was very pushy and controlling but I didn't realise it at the time because he was very charming.

One day he got into my Facebook account and changed my password and changed the details to his email account. When I confronted him about it he said he was a hacker. I didn't believe him because he was just a normal guy with a retail job. His reason for doing this was that we were "meant to be together."

This was about five or six years ago. How would he have gotten into my Facebook account?

>be me
>looking for a laptop, for work mainly
>"just get a second hand THINKpad they are cheap durable and more than enough for your work"
>lurk on a second hand stuff site
>"Lenovo ThinkPad T400 with original charger/battery plus laptop bag 100€"
>imokwiththat.mp3
>meet up at scheduled place and time and start looking arround for the seller
>nothing so i just text him "im in a baby blue shirt near the xxx coffee"
>order a cooffee and go sit
>some islamic terrorist style type of person touches my shoulder
i shit you not he was wearing sandals, a turbant, large fitness pants and a light brown sweater and as a final touch a huge beard
>thinking to myself if i was being robbed or some shit
"are you anon?"
>hm yeh why?
"i'm the owner of the ThinkPad"
>ohh
>i hurry the sell because i just can't feel confortable
everything looks cool, give money collect T400 leave
>next day
>free morning so take laptop and go to local library i like it there chill and all
>first time using the T400 on my own after sell
>use it all good with it, battery starts going low
>15% , T400 makes a loud 1 tone sound, i ignore it because it didn't bothered me that much
at this point i was like "battery is alredy at 15% better let it go completely out and charge it back home
>WORST MISTAKE I EVER MADE

cont.
>>
>>55143251
>T400 battery hits 6% with not a single pop up or something similar

>THINKPAD STARTS MAKING THIS LOUD AS HELL SOUND
>SOMETHING LIKE A SIREN
>HOLY FUCK AT THIS MOMENT I DIDN'T KNEW WHAT TO DO OR WHAT THE HELL WAS HAPPENING
>REMEMBER THE SELLER
>TURBANT ... SANDALS ... BEARD ...
>START SCREAMING "HOLY FUCK IT'S A BOMB RUN!! IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE!"
>PEOPLE START RUNNING AND SCREAMING
>I GRAB T400 AND THROW IT AS HARD AND AS FAR AS I CAN FROM THE 1ST FLOOR WINDOW
nothing happens, nothing explodes

>mfw my laptop didn't had a bob planted on it
>mfw the seller was legit
>mfw i'm banned from that library ever since then

AND FINALLY
>MFW THAT MOTHERFUCKING SOUND , THAT LOUD COCKSUCKER SOUND THAT SOUNDED LIKE A MOTHERFUCKING SIREN WAS THE VERY LOW BATTERY WARNING SOUND
