My new notebook arrived and I am about to install Windows 10 on it. I also have the option of sticking with 7 or installing 8.1.
Memeing aside, is there anything wrong with installing Windows 10?
Also, what settings, programs, etc. do you recommend?

Honestly I've used Win 10 since release now and I've only had one issue which was resolved in an update; the start menu wouldn't open (but not really a problem because I just used win+R to run programs I needed). That issue seems to be fixed now though. Go to settings and change your privacy settings and you'll be fine.
I don't know why but Windows font rendering make me sick. I always feel headache after reading on windows. On linux I don't.
Someone has experience of that?

So my group chat on live messenger finally disappeared (yes, it still worked up until now, somehow).
What is a good alternative? Skype is fucking gay and IRC is too old school for my normie friends who were also still using live messenger. Must have a PC client and have a permanent chat room that you can just drop into and out of. Message sync is not important. I like not getting messages from these types of chats when I'm not online.

Can someone explain to me how programs like fmod can create polyphony between simple waveforms (sine, square, etc) without the listener perceiving them as being a single, more complex waveform?

I don't understand the question. Everything you hear can be expressed as waveforms of varying complexity.
You should read up about harmonics and auditory perception.

Same poster here. I think I understand what you're getting at.
Perhaps a more accurate question would be "why is polyphony not interpreted by the human ear as a single note?", and the answer to that is "harmonics". Harmonics are created by all basic waveforms besides the sine wave, and are also pretty much unavoidable in the physical world (try creating an acoustic instrument that creates a perfect sine wave). Harmonics also aren't random, they occur at very specific multiples of the principle frequency.
I don't know all the specifics of the human perception side, but our ears can use harmonic information to tell different tones apart.
