IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Also how's the battery life?

After an anomaly in spacetime continuum, all systems using Unix time suddenly skip exactly one second.

What would be the consequences of this? Would anybody even notice?

Lmao memes. I have used systemd for years and I don't give a shit on openrc.

>muh UNIX philosophy
Yeah? So why not use a true UNIX distribution?

The only thing I hate about potteringware is pulseaudio crap. It works but too much of hassle incase something breaks.

What does /g/ think of modern text editors, like Atom / VSCode (every editor Electron based), or even Sublime or NeoVim? My only problem is that most are... well, web based and not as neat/light as vim is for example.

you're putting it much more nicely than they deserve.

Sublime isn't web based.

I never said it was, nor NeoVim. I just said most modern text editors are web based. Atom, Code, Brackets...

ITT we make /g/ approvd insults. I'll start.

If you were a method in C, you would be fgets. Get it, because fgets sounds like faggot?

I told this one to my CS professor and he had a weird look on his face. Probably because I burned him pretty bad even though I only had a C in his class. Anyway, feel free to use this one.

Thanks. I think this is one of the better threads on this board honestly. Too many of them are Linux 'fanboys' (using that term lightly because they don't really like it, they just can't afford Windows or iOS) bashing on better operating systems.

If you want to code you can take a workshop and learn in a few months then get a job, if you want to bullshit your way through a traditional 4 year program with B's then you're going to have a bad time.

Ok, let's talk about one of the most crucial parts in our battle machines, /g/.

What's your current PSU?
What features are essential for you?
Favourite brands?

A PSU of mine is Corsair VS550, it's pretty nice, although it's poor PSU, considering the fact, that is Corsair's product. But I got it in very good condition for something like 35$.
