Why are square shaped pixels so widely used when triangle shaped pixels are much better? Pic related.

why do retarded people make new threads when we have an ongoing stupid questions thread?
>>
>>55029030
Because it is not a stupid question.
>>
At least on a computer, most things are going to be shaped around straight edges. I wont deny that the triangles look better in that pic tho for organic structures.

wait for benchmarks.
though if you sell the GTX 970 now some retard might buy it at a price that allows you to get RX 480

Real talk, do you think nVidia is preparing a GTX 1060 that will be competitive with the RX480, or is AMD just going to dominate the midrange market?

BSD vs Linux
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

they're both shit

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

Linux:
>better hardware support than BSD
>less setup for most distributions, it can be easier

BSD:
>more true to Unix origin
>simple, though not easy
>no systemd nonsense
>no pulse-audio nonsense
>generally better thought out and put-together than Linux distributions

so /g/, how is it?

I had one for 6 weeks but ended up returning it due to issues with sleep not working and the whole system going mental when I undocked from the eGPU in the keyboard. Both are/were known issues with no fix at the time. Hopefully they are fixed now but I have no idea.

I was happy to get rid of it by the end of all my troubles but before they really got to me I loved the machine. The screen is sensational. Keyboard is better than a macbook pro but not as nice as a modern thinkpad. trackpad is almost as good as what apple can do but still doesnt feel quite as natural. The screen is fucking gorgeous though. I havent seen a better screen.

I ended up switching to a thinkpad x1 carbon which has been perfect to be fair.

i wish microsoft had actually given us a proper fucking laptop though. not this detachable shit that just causes more problems. they have some fucking fetish about tablets and touch when I DONT FUCKING WANT IT. Just give me a Microsoft ThinkPad ffs

>i wish microsoft had actually given us a proper fucking laptop though
This

But they are insisting on the UWP/tablet interface gimmick

Im sorry but windows is useless this way.
>>
>>55029330
Microsoft's aversion to practicality is puzzling. They're so close to making a real actual rMBP killer but their hardon for tablets is too uncontrollable.

As a current Mac user I might even buy an official MS laptop if it were a proper laptop. I like my 9.7" iPad Pro better for tablet stuff so the hybrid crap is just an annoyance and handicap to me.

NEET on summer break here. I've finally gotten sick of playing CSGO all day, I've got the whole rest of the summer and a lot of adderall, and I've always felt like my coding skills were lackluster and half-assed, lazily learned mostly from mandatory high school and college classes and copied from smarter classmates.

So I want to learn. Here's the thing though, I'm the kind of person that if they're not wholly interested in something, even if I have other reasons for wanting to learn it, my brain's not going to be able to put forth the effort no matter what. But when I dedicate myself to it, I really really get into it, to the point where I start hitting inflection points and reaping exponential returns on the amount of material I read.

What I want to do then is fully immerse myself in the guts and intestines of programming until I'm so hopelessly deep in that I have no other option but to learn as much as I can at the lowest level, without fear of being another code monkey casual drifting along at the surface. I've read the Steve Jobs biography and always admired how he went balls deep in whatever he did, and desu I'm sick of waiting for classes to challenge me with some arbitrary random coding project that I wait until 2 days before to start, and then half-bake the logic and scrap the rest of the code from someone else. I want to challenge myself, force myself to get into it, namsayin?

The relevant coursework I've taken so far includes: an operating systems course, which barely touched on process handling as well as served as an introduction to C; two digital logic courses, so I'm roughly familiar with the general concepts around actual I/O operations and assembly; and a bunch of semi-related EE/CpE courses (I'm mainly an EE major) having to do with transistor logic and more physical electrical-ly type stuff. I want to maybe start with C, as that was the toughest part of anything I've done so far, and I hated the teacher, and feel like I could improve on that.

>>
Oh and forgot to mention, some applied modern algebra-type courses as well. Like I said, I wanna go hard & fast into it, so if that includes related math fields and concepts, bring it on nigger
>>
Excellent.

Go write a program that downloads all post images in a 4chan thread, and saves them to a directory of your choice. In C. No external libraries other than C standard libraries and basic network sockets.

That's your assignment. Learn whatever you need to learn to get it done, no excuses. Google the fuck out of the problem to learn the relevant technologies, but don't look at programs that do the exact same thing. Return when it works.

How is your favorite language better than Haskell?

It doesn't take over 1 gigabyte to install because it's actually well designed so that all the libraries don't need to ship in three different copies like Haskell's dynamic, static and repl versions. While at it, it can create completely independent images depending on nothing, embedding the entire language within.

Just 11 megs.

Guess what it is.

A hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness—not necessarily with computers. The programmers in the old MIT free software community of the 60s and 70s referred to themselves as hackers. Around 1980, journalists who discovered the hacker community mistakenly took the term to mean “security breaker.”

Please don't spread this mistake. People who break security are “crackers.”

i think you're spending too much time on 4chan and extrapolating this one awful shithole to the rest of the world. generally it's a small group of people - people who just like being contrarian - that hate on him.

honestly, why do you care though? even if you were elon musk, why would you care what some people on 4chan thought about you? is any internet-enabled group on the planet less consequential to you?

based af, great taste, used many distros and am now single-booting Lubuntu, I would keep Windows if I were you, only for some software you can't get to run on Linux well

I have a slow as shit X120e with the E-240. With Windows 7 and allegedly the lightest browser I can find, K-Meleon, it still can't even play 360p YouTube videos smoothly. It plays 1080p local videos just fine, so I would imagine 360p YouTube should be no problem. What should I change?

I'm locked out of the BIOS and SecureBoot is on so I'm stuck with Windows 7.

Does that browser properly support hardware acceleration? I'm thinking that for some reason its using the CPU to decode the video instead of passing it off to the hardware video decoder.

It could also be that YouTube is sending you VP9 video and that processor does not have support for VP9: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Video_Decoder#UVD_3

If VP9 is the issue I'm not sure of the best way to fix that, might have to stream the video with some other player instead of doing it in a browser or download it with another program.

>Does that browser properly support hardware acceleration?
It is supposed to. It's based on Firefox, I believe. How can I check if video is VP9?

Right click a video and select "Stats for Nerds" you should get a popup telling you what it is.
