Using his analogy, it'd be like if I fill up my car with gas, and at the end of the month BP comes around and siphons whatever is in my tank out, then wants to charge me extra money to get the gas back so I can drive to their gas station to fill up again for the next month.

do you ever regret your computer "hobbies" /g/?

meanwhile, I look at my room full of old decrepit thinkpads with linux compiling on them and anime stickers. sometimes I hear my mom cry at night.

why do you have linux compiling on multiple old computers

thats only because youre 29 and still live w/her
>>
>>51783192
There's no point in regretting shit like that. I would've fucked up my life anyway. I never really liked people and I never had any ambition to make anything of myself anyway. I'm shit because of who I am, not because of the hobbies I was drawn to.

>Modern computer science is dominated by men. But it hasn't always been this way.

>A lot of computing pioneers — the people who programmed the first digital computers — were women. And for decades, the number of women studying computer science was growing faster than the number of men. But in 1984, something changed. The percentage of women in computer science flattened, and then plunged, even as the share of women in other technical and professional fields kept rising.

>What happened?

>The share of women in computer science started falling at roughly the same moment when personal computers started showing up in U.S. homes in significant numbers.

>These early personal computers weren't much more than toys. You could play pong or simple shooting games, maybe do some word processing. And these toys were marketed almost entirely to men and boys.

>This idea that computers are for boys became a narrative. It became the story we told ourselves about the computing revolution. It helped define who geeks were, and it created techie culture.

>Movies like Weird Science, Revenge of the Nerds and War Games all came out in the '80s. And the plot summaries are almost interchangeable: awkward geek boy genius uses tech savvy to triumph over adversity and win the girl.

>In the 1990s, researcher Jane Margolis interviewed hundreds of computer science students at Carnegie Mellon University, which had one of the top programs in the country. She found that families were much more likely to buy computers for boys than for girls — even when their girls were really interested in computers.

>This was a big deal when those kids got to college. As personal computers became more common, computer science professors increasingly assumed that their students had grown up playing with computers at home.

When will this "women can code too, silly boys!" meme stop?

Just enroll and shut the fuck up already.

Sorry I don't listen to junkies.

Meanwhile women now grow up with just as much access to computers as men but the number of women in CS is still low.

Totally a valid reason though.

Im starting a project and I want to know what he most solid, stable, nigh unbreakable distro of linux there is if im going to read/write to a SQL database thousands of times a day along with running a web server for local machine access. What does /g/ think?

debian or cent. BSD if you feelin loco
>>
>>51782866
Is the command line syntax roughly the same as *nix? I might consider it.
>>
>>51782791
The only way to not break any linux distro is to never let any stupid people use it.

You can use whatever distro you want. The breakage is dependent on you

>>51782885
BSD is a unix OS, yes.

Why not a cheap laptop?

Does anyone know of a way to test if a motherboard is dead for sure? My computer won't post and I have tested the cpu, ram, hdd, and psu. Also, is there a difference between muh EXTREME $500 gaymen mobo and a $50 one?

Aren't you the one who bought that meme keyboard?
>>
Seems like you've already trouble shooted and filtered it down to it being a Mobo problem. Only other thing I can recommend is ensuring you have a mobo speaker installed to listen to beep codes. My last guess would be your boards standard bios isn't compatible with the current CPU (ala some H87 boards not compatible with Devils canyon CPUs). Otherwise the only major differences are features, aesthetics, and support. That and VRMs / mosfets.

I have speaker installed, and my setup was working before until I moved to a different case
