Why do so many tech jobs offer meme benefits? Four beers on tap? Crossfit gym membership? I'm surprised they don't offer beard transplants and free use of the company fixie. At least it isn't as bad as the company that advertised "free popcorn" as one of the top benefits. I've noticed that employers that have these "perks" tend to be poorly managed and end up with lots of death march projects.

What's the oddest perk you've seen offered?

I would literally kill someone(s) to have this perk

Going to try this again.

Who DNSSEC[1][2] here? Why do you use it? What do you use it for? Have you considered TLSA (DANE[3]), SSHFP[4], OPENPGPKEY[5] RRs yet? Discuss.

Perhaps you also use DNSCrypt[6] for encryption of your queries? Or maybe you like to encrypt everything and you're running DNSCurve[7]?

Newbies section:
>If you're thinking about registering your own domain, check if they offer DNSSEC. Some registrars automatically sign your zone, which means you most likely can already add your TLSA RRs and such. Other registrars offer to upload your DS RR, or your KSK/ZSK's public key instead. That's also nice if you wish to host your authoritative name server yourself.

There's also an interesting new IETF draft, SMTP STS[8]. Would be interesting to secure your MTA more.

I'm running Unbound with DNSSEC validation from the IANA root.

If I had a domain, I'd definitely implement TLSA records.

I'd like ask you a question, OP.
How did you come to learn so much about DNS? Do you work with it? Do you have any resources that you can share? I just want to learn more, is all. Thanks.

Well, I'm doing a masters in CS but I became very interested in DNS, and especially DNSSEC (I like cryptography in general). I have a good professor and he suggested me to start reading the RFCs, registering my own domain and just play with it. I did as he suggested and we sometimes discuss certain DNS aspects we both find interesting. I'm still learning a lot, but he still knows *way* more than I do.

I guess I can advice everyone the same who is interested in DNS. Start with the theory (RFCs and the DNS concepts in general) and then apply your new knowledge in practice. By learning the theory and then applying it your own domain it makes a lot of sense and you'll learn plenty.

i thought you dead, faggot

This is my situation:
I need a laptop for uni because my old one is seven years old and a desktop replacement.
I'd like something mobile, silent and future proof.
I'm torn between the Dell XPS 13 9350 (8/256) and the Lenovo Yoga 900S (Core M7/8 GB/256)
What do you think?
I'm not getting a thinkpad.

How do you justify torrenting media and blocking ads?

I just like to think I've disappeared off the face of the planet, behind my VPNs. I like to think I'm doing good, making every digital file available and freely shareable, like it should be. There's no fucking file system in mainstream mobile OSes, everything's moving to the cloud/streaming model for this reason. They don't want you doing basic file management, because it would probably enable filesharing.

Blocking ads, eh, I do it because I can. No spam, no website theme clashes, no banner ads that lead to viruses. They brought the ad blocking revolution on themselves. If all else fails I just pull a Thom Yorke "I'm not here, this isn't happening..." - there's no weight I have to pull as part of my bargain for free web services. I work in tech so at least I'm giving back.

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I got the Galaxy s6 , i like it its pretty ok not too big to fit in my pockets. It has a good battery set up to where it lasts for my needs , but for me it does have some down sides.

In general when people who have an iphone (not so sure about andriod to andriod) i get 144p blurry videos , and plus i don't think even andriods can send videos idk if its the messaging app (textra) or service provider (t-mobile) or if its just the phone its self.

Ok I was actually thinking of buying a mac earlier because I want to indulge in capitalism and im really trying to be a more uneducated cunt who buys shiny things rather than make practical decisions

But really I need a laptop that can render in Vray (3D animation) and is good for rendering purposes (plus a little bit of gaming) the gaming part really turns me off of the mac still

Companies aren't built to upgrade every year. It benefits everyone if Intel and Nvidia started making products built to last instead of a platform that needs upgrading every year.

This is besides the point though, now a days corporate systems are good enough, with the requirement of at least a dual core and an SSD.

So I just moved from Ubuntu to Gentoo. Updating my packages seems to be pretty similar. I used to type
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

now I type
emerge --sync
emerge -uDU --with-bdeps=y @world

The first command makes perfect sense to me, but what the hell does "-uDU --with-bdeps=y @world" mean? I looked at the man page entries but I'm still lost.

What do each of these do, and why do I need them?

>>
>>53756414
Okay... So I think I figured it out

@world is the thing being updated. I could put a single package here or the @world set (which should be all my installed and system packages)

-u means update those packages to the best version.

-D and --with-bdeps=y mean look deeply, look at dependencies, update those too. (though I'm not sure why that is necessary, shouldn't those be under @world?)
>help pls /g/

-U doesn't do anything

Can someone explain the whole FBI-Apple debate? I don't understand Apple's argument about a universal backdoor being created. From what I've read it seems that Apple is just full of shit, if alternative firmware is created to bypass the security it would only bypass it on any device with that firmware, which would be only that device. All the encryption keys are stored somewhere in iOS itself since it's an older iPhone, meaning the security won't be affected except on that device.

I do sympathize with the argument that the government doesn't have the right to force the software to be created, I just don't understand the technical part that Apple is protesting.

The FBI wants to set a legal precedent where they can use the courts to force companies to break their own encryption.
>>
>>53756201
This > >>53756300

Also the FBI like any US authority is less than clean and the knowledge of an exploit backed by insider Apple knowledge will spread to rogue operators both inside the FBI and outside.

That would also give power to anyone else wanting the same request that was granted to the FBI such as foreign countries which could have a poor Human Rights standards or other poor civil standards.

Other obvious point is Apple don't want to be in the business of unlocking encrypted mobile phones for other cases for any authority in the US be that the FBI or regular police.

If that case successfully force Apple to unlock the iPhone for that one case there would be many more cases which would likely be approved due to similarities to the first case that was approved.

Also if the iPhone's security was unlocked it would devalue and ruin people's confidence in the security of the iPhone which is a major selling point for those devices.
If those devices wasn't secure Apple wouldn't be able to compete with Android phones with how the iPhones are at the moment in terms of hardware.

I very much agree with you until I have to use one of these threads. For example, just yesterday I wanted to get new headphones so I posted in the headphone general.

When I was considering buying a thinkpad around Christmas time, I posted in the thinkpad general.

Would the only daily you have be the dpt? It's significantly higher quality than the rest, but let's not pretend that technology == programming, nor that technology == blind consumerism.
>>

Those threads are actually quite useful.

It keeps discussion in one place meaning.
A: If I want to read about it I know where to find it

B: If I don't want to read it the discussion generally stays in those threads.

What would you prefer people talk about on this board?
