Bought a Galaxy S7 yesterday, gave my iPhone 6S to my mother. Appreciate the simplicity of iPhones but just got fed up with how locked down they are. Last Android phone was a GS2 that got water damaged and since then I've been all iOS.

Absolutely loving the S7. Touchwiz is still a piece of shit, but Nova Prime has taken care of most of my problems.

The camera is incredible, if I went outside or had friends I'd have such cool pictures. Fast charging is great too, gonna look into a wireless charger when I get paid.

Turned off the AOD this morning because it's pretty useless to me as I always wear a watch. Love the LED notifications though.

Looking for some recommendations for games and apps, just playing around with emulators at the moment.

Bought pic related for it earlier, was worried it would ruin the sleekness but it looks great and made it super grippy.

What a great phone that was: replaceable battery, SD card, big and loud speaker, physical keyboard.

I still have that Treo 650, it still works. The screen is perfectly functional, because guess what: it's an LCD display so it might live even 20 years.

But I lost the stylus and the battery has swollen and can only hold for about one or 2 days. Basically the battery has the same performance of today's smartphones... Except that it's about 12 years old.

My iphone 6s gets pretty hot when I stream music for any length of time over ~12 minutes. Is this something all 6s models do or should I take it to the apple store?

Also thinking about buying a note 5 or 6p or sony z5 premium (If I can find one that works on tmobile lte)

So between those 3 which one would be my best bet for everyday usage?

I like 5.5 or bigger phones this iphone 6s 4.7 inch screen just feels too small for youtube and maps.

You're essentially fucked, unless it was stored on the SD card. I mean hypothetically you could dismantle it, wire up the storage device and get the files, but this is pretty outlandish and unlikely to be worth the trouble. Maybe if you were the subject of a police investigation they might consider doing this.

If you send it in for warranty there's no guarantee any of your files would survive, if they even return you the same specimen.

Let this be a lesson to keep backups.

Some follow-up thoughts. Battery life has gotten slightly worse, despite doze mode. Makes no sense to me. Went from 6% battery drain over night (about 7 hours) to 15%. Hi, a friend of mine would like to get rid of the bloated Android version his Xperia Z3 came with, what's a good ROM to put on it? CM only has nightly releases which he shies away from (non tech savvy).

>>
>>53699955
See if you can locate the Marshmallow concept ROM that Sony put out for the Z3. I don't think you even have to unlock the bootloader (which deletes DRM keys used for the camera) since it is an official Sony ROM

This looks to be the 6.0.1 version, if you're willing to trust some Czech guy on XDA

http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/sonys-android-concept-marshmallow-t3229030/post65370535#post65370535

the first post in the thread gives you the information about how to flash it. But really if you want vanilla Android and don't want to flash anything, your best bet is to get a Nexus device (although flashing stuff is basically the best part of Nexus devices).

>>53698631
You use your phone for a lot more than just messaging people. Use it as an alarm? That's an app, and the Windows mobile alarm app is shitty, buggy and barebones compared to iOS/Android. Even the messaging app is buggy (probably due to skype integration) on W10M. I wouldn't recommend WP unless you are literally homeless and can't spend more than $30 on a phone (640). But even homeless people deserve better than Windows phone.

>>53697521
>>53697761
Xiaomi makes the best chinkphones, but like (almost) all chinkphones it doesn't support LTE frequencies used in the US, so you'd be stuck on 3G. This is a dealbreaker for me. It *does* work with some carriers in Europe, but for about half of them it is missing a key frequency (band 20) and thus I wouldn't recommend it.

I can't really tell you because I haven't run it, but the concept ROM is apparently much closer to vanilla Android than the regular ROM. Also, Sony's official MM ROM is apparently better than their Lollipop ROM in terms of bloat and such, so if you can get the update I'd go for it (but if he has a carrier model it might not be compatible or released yet) But again, I don't have the device so this is all second hand information so take it with a grain of salt.
>>
>>53700444
Interesting. Problem is he's the sort of phone user that wants everything to just werk, got it with a Vodafone contract and everything, so I'm not really willing to put experimental Android builds on it -- otherwise I'd have installed the latest CM nightly and be done with it. I myself use a Nexus 5 so I can't really test the Z3 MM ROM on a throwaway phone.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

You can get the 5x for something like 250 bucks right now. Sign up for Project Fi, get the 5x for 199, pay for 1 month of Project Fi, then cancel your plan. You get the 5x for the discounted rate for buying the plan with it, and since the plan is a non-contract, you're only required to make one payment on the plan. So you're paying 199 + 20 in taxes + 30 for the plan. Even with the birthday weekend discount, you're saving 100 bucks on the 5x and can resell it if you hate it

hi, I need advice about best keywords to find a comparative test of video recording by (cheap) smartphones.
English is not my language, but I want to search in english.

I tried
>"test smartphones video" (no quotation marks)
>"comparative test smartphones camera video"

Problem is, I don't know how to tell google I want a test about *animated* video quality, *not* still images.

thanks.

To contribute as far as I can, for now I read that many people recommend iPhone 6 (too expensive), then I heard a Pro say that he considered the Sony smartphones were the second best choice (good lenses).

Please don't tell me that a phone that can do good still pictures will also do good videos.

Smartphone Camera Quality.

My best guess is the Oneplus 2 or Oneplus X. They destroy every other camera in their price range.

If you can afford it, obviously the galaxy s7 is the best right now. Next up would be the Nexus 6p

ofc the galaxy s6 and vastly superior, but the price difference is certainly as large.

So I went from a Nexus 6 go 5x. It's definitely going to get some time getting used to the small screen again, but it feels good to be able to use it with one hand. It might be just because it's new, but performance feels smooth as fuck, even with only 2GB RAM. The best thing about it though is the finger print scanner. God damn just being able to unlock and wake the phone in an instant is fantastic. I do wish the Mint color was available when I ordered though since I'm not really feeling the all black. I'm on Project Fi as well, but haven't really gone out the house to test it though so I'm not sure how good it is just yet. Saving $20 a month is gonna be nice though.

Is jailbreaking still a thing on iphones, and had it changed much since the iphone 3g? Does it offer the same level of control that something like Cyanogenmod on Android offers, compared to stock?
>>
>>53703597
The Oneplus X is damn good.
It's cheaper than the Oneplus 2 but is far superior in my book. The 2 doesn't have SD card support, doesn't have an OLED, and costs more money. The downside to the X is that they didn't aim for a US audience, so only it only boasts half the LTE support that you'd get from a standard US LTE phone.

I really wanted to like Windows phone. I really did. But both times I tried it I was severely disappointed. I thought I "didn't really use apps" but it turns out I use a lot more than I think about (and I'm not talking about snapshit). I find catharsis by reading the windows phone subreddit and seeing two camps: 1) the true believers who ignore all evidence that their platform is dying; 2) the realists who realize what a burning platform they are on.

Did they ever fix the poor performance on 5x? There's a huge thread on reddit with people complaining about speed and the camera crashing or being unresponsive.

we told you not to buy it, all positive posts about Nexus 5x/6p are paid shills because there's just nothing good about those phones. The few things that are fade away once you consider their awful price bracket.

Flash cyanogenmod or aicp, if that doesn't help, custom kernel and limit maximum cpu frequency

Quick questions:

Have: iPhone 6S 64GB Gray, scuffed and scratched a tiny bit
Dislike: Lost jailbreak so I pretty much hate the software now, turns off when it's cold outside
Like: Fingerprint reader, 720p@240fps, iCloud Photos, narrow because /smallhands/

Want in new phone: Build quality, good headphone amp/dac (Do they still use Wolfson chips), smoothness, fingerprint reader, 720p@240fps, small bezels, really good battery and camera
Don't care about: Benchmarks, resolution density, mobile data/wifi speeds

So far I've pretty much only looked at the S7 and S7 Edge, both Exynos.

I can get the 5X and G4 for about the same price 32 euros.

Not sure which one to get, I've never had a nexus device. But the G4 seems better in terms of longevity (more ram, microSD and replaceable battery).

The 5X seems like it has a better camera in low light shots though and has the stock android experience. However I see a lot of people complaining about lag, so I'm not too sure whether the stock android is actually good on this one.
>>
>>53719140

>>
>>53719253
I can tell you that that the G4 is a great phone and that a microSD slot and replaceable battery are great features which is why I would choose the G4 over the 5X any day.
>The 5X seems like it has a better camera in low light shots
The camera is the least important feature of a smartphone in my opinion. They're both good enough shooters and I don't think there's that much of a difference.
>>
>>53718850 (me)
>>53719140
I tried the 5X of a buddy who used it for a while now, it's not a "virgin" phone anymore. I can't say it was laggy at all, maybe this happens in some edge cases when running many apps in the background or after heavy gaming (which you shouldn't be doing on your phone anyway). I guess you won't notice any lags if you keep your device clean.
>>
>>53715491
>good camera
>on a smart phone
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>
>>53719329

Well, to me a camera is kind of important as I keep in touch with my family members that happen to travel a lot, and my mom loves me shooting pictures of our cats and dogs (that's why I need low light performance so I don't distract them when using the flash).

I don't care for 3D performance though as I don't play games on my phone.

The G4 and 5x do seem like they're pretty similar, but the 5X does have an edge in low light performance.
>>
>>53699269
>being this much of an autistic shut-in

>>
Why do people still buy Android phones when iPhones have superior OS and hardware?
>>
>>53719500
If you really think something as specific as taking pictures in low light situations is that important, go for the 5X. I don't think anyone would notice the difference all that much though. I know that I'd really prefer a SD card slot if I took / saved that many pictures though.

It's your choice though
>>
>>53719500
If you get a G4 make sure it's not a model with the faulty motherboard
>>
>>53719650

How would I make sure of that?

>>53719628

You are probably right, the difference might be negligible. But what about the LG skin? Is it as obnoxious as touchwizz?

I'm starting to lean towards the G4 more, as other than low light performance it seems like it has the better feature set, battery life seems worse though.

>>53719861
>>53719650

I didn't even hear about this issue as it didn't affect my device. It's always possible that the phone you receive is faulty, but the chance isn't that big. Just try googling "Nexus 5x issues" and I am sure that you will find some off putting stuff as well. Don't let it get to you.

I currently have an LG G2 that is finally being shit.

What pisses me off the most about this phone and always has is the shit audio output, plus, the headphone input hardware they use is utter shit - had to have it replaced twice and this one needs to be replaced again. Ready for a new phone.

I'm broke, I am looking at the Nexus 5x, but the fact that it's LG scares me. Is it more of the same shit audio output and shitty audio jack that breaks from normal usage (now I can't even plug in headphones and listen to shit, if I barely tap the phone or move it wrong, it thinks I unplugged the phone and audio stops playing, it's so irritating.)

So are these issues a piece of LG's past now?
>>

>>53728667
I'd recommend buying Z3c instead.

Z5c is having overheating issues, faulty camera and poorly performing fingerprint scanner - Sony even removed it when releasing the phone in the US.

Also it packs only 2 GB RAM, which is laughable for the price, and the battery life is pretty mediocre, which is also bad compared to godlike 4-days battery life in Z3c.
>>
>>53728667
Alright, it's new so you are paying alot more for it now. Nonetheless it represents a substantial hardware update beyond z 2-3+.

Also ~5 inch =/= phablet
>>
>>53729232
No, the issues you mentioned are not present in current LG phones.

However, if you're a big music lover, I'd pick something else. Audio experience on LG phones is not bad by its means, but it's definitely not excellent. I moved from Xperia Z1 to LG G4 and my overall audio experience is a little worse.

When you set up your Android phone you get asked about backup & restore.

Is there a way to look up my old backups?

I prefer Titanium Backup over automatic Google 'cloud' backups because I can decide what to restore and when, so I'm curious what Google has stored about my devices (some which I probably no longer have)
