>tfw compiled binary adblocker in the new version of Opera is so much faster than uBlock Origin which is written in JavaScript

>>
is this true? ublock blocks more than ads too though.
>>
ublock has some better features too, like 3rd party filters for social media, malware, and tracking

Does it hide the gigantic white spaces too?

Lisp is a fully programmable programming language, because Lisp programs are written in the same syntax that Lisp primitives work best with: S-expressions. This means that you can relatively easily create your own variants of Lisp tailored to your problem domain. For example, Andy Gavin created custom Lisp dialects for the Naughty Dog games that mixed high-level programming abstractions with assembly constructs and even direct manipulation of the GPU via parallel threads of execution.

Lisp derives this kind of programmability primarily from its syntax, which is simple enough for a Lisp program -- either at compile time or run time -- to examine, modify, and then run. Lisp advocates often point to the powerful Macro facilities which let programs modify themselves at compile time.

From a pedagogical standpoint, Lisp is excellent because it's feasible in one or two semesters to have students create a complete Lisp interpreter in Lisp, thereby learning the basics of how programming languages "work".

In contrast, if you try to do the same thing with, say, Python, you have to first take an extended detour into tokenizing, parsing, and abstract syntax trees. These are great topics for a more advanced class (e.g., a compiler construction course) but not so much for an introductory class.

Finally, programs are themselves just data, meaning one can reason about them formally. Getting this point across to students is incredibly important, because this observation underlies all of modern Computational complexity theory -- see, for example, the Turing machine.

A year ago I built my first pc and used a SSD and regular hard drive combo. I have windows on the solid state. Over the course of the year I've noticed that as I install shit on my regular hard drive, random shit is still located on the solid state that I didn't intend to be. Did I do something incorrectly in relation to setting up my drives?

For example, I have a video game installed on HDD, but there is a random folder of random shit like replays/screenshots on my solid state. How do I fix this?

Some games are coded by retards and have hard-coded paths. Nothing you can do.

Who and why uses Perl in current year?
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
i use it. because work uses it. most likely because someone a long time ago decided to use it and now they have an enormous legacy perl codebase that would be too expensive to port to another language.
>>
I use it for all my scripting and web programming needs.

Gonna get an android phone to replace my iPhone 6s soon. Is 32GB of internal storage + a 32GB micro sd card enough for average use? I've never owned an android phone in my life btw.

I plan to get a1337 uhs-3 micro sd card which is why I'm hesitating getting one with more than 32GB of capacity.

32 GB MicroSD card is fine. 64 GB is only if you plan on carrying around a shitload of music and videos. 128 GB is autism tier. 200+ GB is "Look how much money I have to spend!" tier.

It depends on your OS. Do you want functional high-resolution support on your Windows applications? GTK for Windows still doesn't handle that all that well. Also, GTK apps on Windows stick out like a sore thumb. The only good options for UI on Windows are:

1. Shove your application into node-webkit or Chromium Embedded Framework (you don't get multi-monitor DPI) or Edge (technically doable but you get to write the wrapper yourself)
2. Write your own TK in D3D or OpenGL (lots of work, easy to screw up)
3. Write everything to run in an AppContainer so you can use Modern UI XAML (easy, supports all the corner cases well, but requires the user manually approve installing unsigned AppX packages in Win10)

I would personally say #3 but you basically lock yourself into Windows 10 specifically and I know /g/ doesn't like that.

OSX is easy: just use the default UI widgets (AppKit I think it's called), they handle DPI for you and size everything in virtual pixels. You have to learn Objective-C or Swift, boohoo.

Linux is complicated. GTK is likely to have the user's desired theme at least on Ubuntu, but it's DPI handling is about as bad as it is on Windows. That is to say, it scales nothing but type, which is unacceptably bad. At least, that's what it did when I was trying to develop software on a 4K monitor for Ubuntu. QT apps didn't seem to be much better and the only thing that could actually scale itself properly on Linux was Chrome of all things.

Why are people on this board so autistic about not having any icons on their Desktop?

It's simply the most convenient way of storing often used files
27 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
I find typing equally convenient when it comes to oft-used files. I don't keep my desktop perpetually empty though. It's where I put things that are currently in use, like a text file I'll be consulting and editing all weekend. Once that activity is over I'll store it away. It works just like my physical desk's surface.

Storing in folders with a shortcut in the start menu/whatever is just as convinent and not nearly as much of a sloppy mess.

At the Nvidia Launch Event that happened yesterday, they talked about 1070's and 1080's performance, and how they compare to Titan X, 980ti and 980.

>DirectX 12 was kind of avoided, but apparently there is a 25% increase in performance compared to a Titan X or 980 ti.

>1070 specs:
6.5 TFLOPS

9 TFLOPS Max
8GB GDDR5X at 10 GHz (can be overclocked to 11.016 MHz), 320 GB/s

They just obseleted the entire current crop of GPUs. Like, all of them. They're all dead. Nice job NVidya.
>>
>>54427297
OP here, I really wanted AMD to at least compete with Nvidia in this generation of GPU's, but I guess we'll have to wait for Vega or something.
>>
>>54427321
They might still be able to compete on price, assuming the 1050 doesn't absolutely cream them. Which it probably will.

There won't be a next generation for AMD. They need to get a clean hit on NVidia and Intel this generation and it ain't happening. Zen doesn't look like it's going to be much better than Intel chips from 2 generations ago.
