any SIMD extension amd develops will eventually lack software support and flops/$ of both intel, amd or nvidia are roughly the same. I hate to say it but buying a product which is not made by the market leader makes as much sense as left wing politics.
Little to none of the video editing software in the market supports amd's video encoding engine for example.
In these market conditions, AMD's strategy can only be benefiring from the ignorance of the customers. Prove me wrong. also, please respond.

>buying a product which is not made by the market leader
So I guess you buy iPhones then, right?
Also, are you retarded? Plenty of video editing software supports OpenCL acceleration, including the Adobe suite and Sony Vega, arguably the most important ones. Few of them are limited to just CUDA, and those tend to be the smaller, lesser used ones.
>>
>>54388690
If AMD truly wanted traction for their extensions and OpenCL. They'd do the 'Gaywerks' method by paying/for free work with software firms to incorporate their technologies in their encoding and whatever else. Keep doing it for free till 40% of the software firms customers are AMD based hardware. Drop free support in accordance with the initial agreement to provide support and resources maintaining their technologies. And then watch as the software firms depend on it for 40% of their customers and support their technology on their own accord.

Just like Nvidia and Intel.

As opposed to what? This is all I've been exposed to, so I don't know what else is out there.

To answer your question, it's a shitty community college. Yes, I know it's pointless to pursue a career in computers if you're not at one of the top ten schools in the country, according to /g/. I don't need lectured on that. I'm doing the best I can given my current circumstances, and I could use some help.

1. You don't need to go to a top 10 school. I go to a D1 state school and they're pretty decent, although they could be better.

2. Most decent/good programmers are self-taught. Don't blame school.

OK you want help to learn programming. Download Visual Studio. Learn how to code in C and/or C++. It is a good starting point. There are lots of online resources for you. You're honestly wasting your time with this community college class if this is what they are having you do. My advice to you would be to get into a state university as soon as you can and take programming there. Community college is not for "core classes", it's for general education. If you don't want to pursue a degree in "programming" then you can take a programming course at the university as a non-degree seeking student.

It's time to optimize it even further.
Grab the new unstable kernel and compile it 6 times with diferent options to test it for your hardware, don't stop until you have achieved maximum performance on all possible areas of application.

Any FirefoxOS users on /g/?

I've been considering purchasing an LG Fx0, but I'm unsure of the limitations of the software. I don't care about the "app" situation, though I'm interested in how easy it is to modify the certain aspects of the OS and why there have been issues porting FFOS 2.6 to the device.

Hey. I have used multiple FirefoxOS devices since the launch day of the os itself. Let me go straight to the point:
- OS have a lot of performance issues, lagging animations, random crashes, considering the HW capabilities - around 60% of what the same phone could do on android
- OS is nearly dead. I have been developing apps to it for quite a while however marketplace/store/we policies change a lot, this often means they disable a shitton of apps until dev takes care of the issues (eg. legal)
- if you think WP doesn't have apps you are wrong, FFOS doesn't have apps at all
- OS is very much customizable. Way more than any android device is. UI is entirely ran in browser and you can do whatever the hell you want with it. I release quite a few roms for european alcatel one touch fire. Going as far as to modify the kernel, enable zram, do a minor tweaks to the performance. You can literally rebuild the system to whatever suits you. However kernel sourcecode availability is limited to device manufacturer so do your research.
As to the device itself. If you like aesthetics of it (I sure do) do a research about android rom availability. If android development is on hold or you don't at least get to have android 4.4+ just drop the idea. FFOS doesn't even allow you to browse web comfortably. Not to mention day to day use.
>>
>>54388090
Also worth mentioning: it's awfully simple to dualboot android and FFOS. FFOS by default has Clockwork recovery, adb enabled and well it only gets easier from there.
>>
>>54388107
>>54388090

Thanks so much for the detailed response. Super informative.

A shame to hear about speed issues (and performance, as compared to android). Cool about the level of customization possible though, given manufacturer cooperation. I'll do more device-specific research!

What are the chances of getting a Cintiq for cheap?

Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Hi /g/, I posted this on /v/ but it's probably better to post it here.
Basically I got a new laptop but it's displaying dark colors like a badly compressed JPG, and I've messed around with the settings but the problem persists.
Could it be a hardware issue or something else? Thanks.

It could be a hardware issue or something else. Most likely to do with display drivers, try updating them. If not see if there are 3rd party display setting you can mess with. If both those options fail to fix it then contact the vendor to see if they have a fix.

Most programming languages fall out of fashion and are forgotten within a decade, yet C has remained relevant for 45 years because it has remained un-corrupted by feature creep, scope creep, or political correctness.
