Is it possible/viable to put modern components into an old case, and use the original keyboard, mouse, and monitor?
I prefer the look of older PCs but I need to still be able to use it.

Tips on debloating Ubuntu?

Linux newbie here running Ubuntu with Unity DE, noticed I've got nearly 2000 packages and I imagine a lot of them are superfluous and never/rarely used.

Is there any sort of comprehensive list on unneeded Ubuntu/Unity packages? Any essential things I should do to lighten up and optimise my DE and OS?

Also; General Debloating Thread.

Try Arch instead. It follows a minimalist, KISS philosophy that will allow you the lightest, most streamlined GNU/Linux experience possible, with zero bloat and everything tailored to your specific needs. It's known for being extremely reliable as well.

What are /g/-approved advertisement blockers?
20 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
You destroy websites by spreading that cancer. And you will spread sponsored (ad) content that's impossible to ignore.
Now ads are still conviently boxed away. Which will end when normies start ad blocking.

So if you wish to keep ad blocking you need to silently do so.

>The Department of Justice on Monday filed to withdraw a legal action compelling Apple's assistance in unlocking an iPhone linked to last year's San Bernardino shootings, saying it successfully gained access to, and extracted data from, the target device.

What a fucking joke. I hope none of you bought an iPhone because you thought the FBI couldn't hack into it. Apple BTFO.

Whats your annual salary for working at FBI's "social media campaign" division?

If I had to guess, I'd say no more than 80k a year and no less than 40k a year.

What did you need to apply for such job? Extended reddit account? Facebook account? 4chan gold membership?

Linux is a monolithic, bloated, low-quality ball of puke. The fact that it's open source does not make it better than Windows. GNU, specifically glibc, which gcc evily links into *everything* is a steaming pile of crap. GNU tools are bloated.

Give me a reason not to use BSD or MINIX.

Lets compare the R&D budgets that go into creating an optimal user experience for Linux/BSD/MINIX/Windows respectively...

$0/$0/$0/$300,000,000
>>
>>53739567

Well of course.
>>
There are some small issues of compatability, in that some programs expect modules from the Linux kernel which have no replacement in *BSD. *BSD doesn't always support as wide of a range of hardware as Linux, either. If you have those issues, you can either try to write your own replacements for those missing features, or use GNU/Linux. If you don't have a compatability issue, there's not really a great reason not to use a *BSD. I use FreeBSD on my desktop.

It's over, the good guys win.

Remember this case was literally whether or not the US government had a right to
1) force people to work for them
2) force people to destroy their own (intellectual) property & product

I am thinking about buying an Alienware x51 desktop computer mostly for steam games, it would be customized as follows:

Processor: Intel Core i7-6700
Video Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX™ 970 with 4GB GDDR5
Memory: 16GB
Alienware Graphics Amplifier ($179.99)

Total Price: $1,579.98

How does this computer compare with the market?

That's just not powerful enough. I mean it would be perfect for things like terraria but anything else would lag too much.
