Is it possible/viable to put modern components into an old case, and use the original keyboard, mouse, and monitor?
I prefer the look of older PCs but I need to still be able to use it.

yes, i just made one like that, it runs just about anything at 1080p60 and the only reason it doesn't do so on ultra is because I put a cheap gpu in it

Of course, as long as it's ATX, it will take ATX components.
Be mindful that most beige box cases were designed for older hardware with substantially less power consumption and heat output, so you aren't going to fit an overpowered gaming shitbox build into it without some modding or resorting to liquid cooling.
If you use a working old system (hopefully nothing special or high-end) for one of these projects, at least sell or give the guts to someone who will appreciate them. Other than "retro gaming" types, old hardware is a wonderful learning tool.

I got a cash register PC case. It was a full size tower set horizontally that held 3 5", 3 3", and 5 internal 3". I have had it for 15 years, and it worked great with all my upgrades
