A basic driver is only 2MB.
Why do I need a 300-400MB download just to update GPU drivers these days?

You can download a driver without any extras and they're usually about 20-40mbs for basic functionality. The space is taken up by additional calls, game patches and the GUI.
Bloat.
It's not just the graphics driver, it's everything that comes with it plus their dependencies.
That flashy GUI? 100MB of dependencies.
Audio driver.
PhysX driver.
3D driver.
Game-specific settings profiles.

.The past week is the first time I've used a chromebook. I've always avoided them because I heard they were underpowered garbage.
but it seems legit. i actually enjoy it more than i ever remember enjoying windows or linux/ubuntu. It's just stupid simple to use, and theres no headache.
My gripes about it so far (Acer CB3-131-C3VC)::
Some o the keys I'd like to exist are missing. examples would be delete, Caps lock, Prtsc, and some sort of 'home' key like the windows key or apples weird squiggle.
Theres no right click, so you're forced to use multi touch functionality which i've never been a fan of. I have more control over two solid buttons than what a touchpad picks up.
Theres not a lot of settings options, it almost feels like you're using someone elses device as opposed to your own. perhaps im simply in the dark and just missing something, but I see no control panel-type system that openly lets me tune the computer to my liking.
other than that I like everything about it.

What does /g/ think about the idea of modern dumb phones?

I don't see the appeal. There are smartphones with very good battery life, especially if you use them exactly how you'd use a dumbphone. Some people cite privacy concerns but I haven't been under the illusion of having privacy with my cell phone for far longer than 10 years. I'm carrying a microphone and radio transmitter in my pocket either way.
You could conceivably use lots of old phones on a modern GSM network as long as you can fit your SIM into them. They make micro-to-full adapters for next to nothing. Might as well get an old phone, a new chink battery and go to town.

Does SSD give that much of a speed boost for every day tasks such as PDF viewing/editing and Onenote? Or is the benefit primarily for fast boot up? So if I have my laptop on stand up mode or on all the time, it has less noticeable benefits?
