Are VIM and Emacs just memes?

Do professional programmers actually use them or is it just wannabe coders who think writing code in a terminal makes them feel like a "pro hacker"?

I don't understand why someone would want to use a terminal text editor over an actual IDE designed for programming with mouse support.

Do professional programmers actually use them?

Is navigating through code with a bunch of keystrokes actually any faster?

What about all the debugging and other extra features IDEs can provide that these text editors lack?

Don't think so

>Are VIM and Emacs just memes?
No
>Do professional programmers actually use them or is it just wannabe coders who think writing code in a terminal makes them feel like a "pro hacker"?
Pros do use them. It's just that the entry to them can be tedious to learn.
>I don't understand why someone would want to use a terminal text editor over an actual IDE designed for programming with mouse support.
Emacs has a graphical display you could call an IDE. Gvim also has an IDE.
>Is navigating through code with a bunch of keystrokes actually any faster?
Hell yes.
>What about all the debugging and other extra features IDEs can provide that these text editors lack?
Emacs has a plethora of debugging features. It's practically it's own OS. Not sure about vim.
>>
>>55270023
It depends a lot on the langauge.

For many languages outside th big IDE C++/C#/Java, emacs/vim are your best IDE.

Most of those features, especially debugging, they can do quite well.
Mainly just refactoring they tend to be weak in.
And if you aren't in a windows shop, then no VS for C++.

So yes, a good chunk uses them exclusively, the other good chunk only occasionally needs to open up vim or emacs.
Then a small chunk uses sublime or nano or atom or some shit.
No professional programmer doesn't regularly use some text editor, IDEs don't cover everything.

Hey, I'm bored of my day-job and in the mood to write a website in C++. (Obviously still just serving html/css/js to the end user, but all processing will be done in C++). At the moment I've got no idea what to write. Anyone care to bounce some ideas off of me?

Tools / libraries / etc. I plan on using for the project: C++14 (17?) via GCC, debian 64-bit, fastcgi, nginx, postgresql, and libpqxx. Scrypt and Let's Encrypt if I start to take the project seriously and need some password hashing / SSL, respectively. I'll use Boost if I come to need it, but I'll avoid it if I can.

Also, if you just want to shit on C++, I guess you can do that here. I enjoy the language, but that's just me and my cup of tea.

Why not write an browser extension that allows the server to send c++, then it's executed client side?

anyone fucked around with one of these?

seems pretty simple but i feel like im overlooking something can heat be a problem?

windows should be able to turn the thing off right?

Yeah, I have one for emergencies so that I can access my files on my laptop if my desktop breaks somehow.

>windows should be able to turn the thing off right?
When turn it on it powers up the drive and it spins constantly as far as I can remember.

Why would you need to use it for prolonged periods anyway? They're only really useful for data recovery or for cloning drives. If you need to have an extra drive connected to your computer constantly, just plug it into the motherboard like your other drives.
>>
I have one and it has a physical power button. Heat is not a problem. What are you afraid of?
>>
>can heat be a problem
just make sure to leave it on for no less than 3 minutes on medium heat. you can use the time to get your butter/jam/marmalade ready.

I recently purchased 2 GTX 1080's and I need to know which slot spacing SLI bridge I need that would best accommodate this motherboard: Asus X99 A - II (see pic)

This is the diagram they provided for slot spacing, and I'm more or less clueless. (at bottom of page)

I bought a top of the line late 2013 MBP model.

>16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory
>1TB flash storage.
>2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache.
>NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching

I've got the same one with same specs and there is really no reason to upgrade right now. The CPU is more powerful than the one in my gaymen rig. I use my rmbp for strictly productivity and my other computers for bullshitting around.

Seriously, this is it. This is the best smart device of 2013 and quite possibly 2014.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
>5.7 inch LCD 1080p screen with better PPI ratio than iPhone 5s
>4k Video Camera, no other comparable devices offers this feature
>3gigs of RAM and 2.2GHz processor so there is absolutely zero Android lag (legit)
>S-Pen to draw heug dicks to text your friends
>Flexible display variant to be released
>Bezels thinner than your mom’s clit
>Best smart device for running apps in window mode, no more LOLFULLSCREENAPPMODE for a fucking a calculator app

>but muh small girly feministic hands
No one cares about your physical inadequacies Barbara. You were given the shit 5’2 manlet genes of life. Sac up and learn to use a man’s phone.

Better specs than iPhone 5s
Better screen than iPhone 5s
Better functionality than iPhone 5s
No NSAtrackprint.

Let me reiterate
>5.7 inch LCD 1080p touch screen
>Included S-Pen for writing, drawing, and gesture shortcuts
>Flexible display
>4K Video Camera

>Multi-vision for some sweet, sweet Note-finity widescreen experience with fellow Note 3 fans

>It can occasionally makes phone calls

Best specs, best screen, and best functionality, period.
Not even the Sony Z Ultra Bezels can compete since its phablet size reaches the threshold into retard realm.
