When I broke their site (my middle name is "SQL Injection" because my last name contains a ') they fixed their site in minutes.
Every time I emailed them for support they responded within hours, half the time pointing out how it was my fault and leaving it at that, the other half making an update that fixed the issue within days.

Are screen protectors necessary in 2016 when most (read: any worth buying) phones come with Corning™ Gorilla® Glass© screens?

microSD cards - or any Flash-RAM media storage device - cannot just "format itself." What you had was a fake card in the first place where someone modified the EEPROM data which IDs the card as something it's not. Probably just an 8GB card modded to say 64GB and you trying to push more than that amount of data hosed it.
