Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

IRC connection details:
Server: chat.freenode.net:6667 (no SSL, 6697 for SSL) - Channel: #flt
If you don't have an IRC client (which you should), go to https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/flt to use IRC on a web client.

Visit the Friendly GNU/Linux Thread/Website:

How do I go on an adventure with Richard Stallman?
>>
>>54735039

Go to his events and ask him.
http://www.fsf.org/events/rms-speeches.html

If I am visiting an interesting city or region, I will probably want
to do a few hours of sightseeing in between the work. But don't try
to plan sightseeing for me without asking me first--I can only spare a
limited time for it, so I am selective about where to go. Please
don't assume I want to see something just because it is customary to
take visitors there. That place may be of no interest with me.
Instead, please tell me about possible places to visit--then I can say
what I would like.

I enjoy natural beauty such as mountains and rocky coasts, ancient
buildings, impressive and unusual modern buildings, and trains. I
like caves, and if there is a chance to go caving I would enjoy that.
(I am just a novice as a caver.) I often find museums interesting,
but it depends on the subject.

I tend to like music that has a feeling of dance in it, but I
sometimes like other kinds too. However, I usually dislike the
various genres that are popular in the US, such as rock, country, rap,
reggae, techno, and composed American "folk". Please tell me what
unusual music and dance forms are present; I can tell you if I am
interested. If there is a chance to see folk dancing, I would
probably enjoy that.

If there is something else interesting and unique, please tell me
about it. Maybe I will be interested.

GNU has a very aggressive policy about no non-free software being allowed. All of these operating system are technically FOSS, but since they have some proprietary software or don't promote themselves as 'GNU', they can't be GNU.

How does /g/ feel about the mini-pc scene? Are they worth it?

I've been wanting to connect a TV to some sort of mini system with a full OS and I'm wondering what I should go with. Intel NUC is interesting but pricey

>>54734616
Overpriced piece of shits, you can do the same with any old laptop with HDMI output, or even with Raspberry Pi.
>>
>>54734633
>Raspberry Pi
Is something I've looked but not quite powerful enough I don't think. I don't demand a great deal of power out of it but I'd like to emulate wii games.
>>
You're paying a price premium for the smaller size. Just get a regular sized computer and stick it behind your TV

Or old laptop

Okay, I have a little project for work purposes:

I have a camera, which detects movements and makes heatmaps of the area it sees. This camera can be accessed via ethernet and provides configuration per browser.

Now I want that camera to be on the internet.

I am thinking of using a raspberry for that with an UMTS modul which then connects to the camera (PoE).

If that's working I should be able to SSH into the rbp and access the camera right?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Sounds fine. The Pi is great for networked low-demand computing.
>>
>>54734546
If it can be accessed via ethernet, just plug it into your router and portforward it.
>>
>>54734559
Thats the thing, it is required to be just plugged into a power source and wort without a connection to a router. That's why I want to put the umts module on the rbp.

Explosive kek.

I spilled water into my chassis and it crashed. I thought blowing a fan on it for an hour would be long enough to get all the water out and I tried to turn it back on like a moron. The computer won't turn back on but my GPU still lights up How fucked am I in terms of broken components? I've already ordered a new mobo because I read online that water damage almost always kills the mobo.

Get some red LEDs, they are exothermic contrary to the blue ones that are endothermic. The warmth of the red LEDs will evaporate the water quickly and if you're lucky everything will work fine again. Also, remove any blue LEDs that are in your PC right now
