well, i'm retarded.

main reason i guess.

Anyone with a brain left this place year ago edition.
I am surprised that this thread doesn't get any post last year we had at least 30 anons discussing it during the whole weekend.
I guess NVIDIA AND AMD AND IPHONE are better threads even though this may be the most novice friendly gathering in years.

Windows 7 is better than 10, but they're both shit compared to GNU/Linux. You should know this.

I'm a mostly self taught hack, I have a firm grip on the front end stack, python and C#/Java.
I keep seeing people gushing about functional programming I fucked around with haskell a bit & I often use ghci as a calculator - but I get lost pretty quick.
I have a couple of questions,
A) Since I'm a .NET VS shill should I learn F#? Or stick with Haskell.. Or something else?
B) What does it really do better than OOPs or quasi OOPs?
C) What can I 'make' with Haskell? Seems all math and no flash

Thanks anon

I feel like people on /g/ just do it for amusement. There is not much call for functional programming and not as much support as other languages.

>A) Since I'm a .NET VS shill should I learn F#? Or stick with Haskell.. Or something else?
What floats your boat? Be comfy.
>B) What does it really do better than OOPs or quasi OOPs?
Less overhead. OOP is a dominant paradigm but people that have grown up in it don't realize just how much semantic overhead comes with it.
>C) What can I 'make' with Haskell? Seems all math and no flash
The point of functional programming is to try to think about things without all the state attached. Once you do that, you expand your understanding and gain yet another paradigm.

It's like going to a Martial Arts instructor and saying "there is only one way", and the instructor promptly shows you about 3 different ways while whooping your ass in the dojo - because your thinking was too rigid to be open to new ways of looking at things. OOP is not the end-all be-all, it is one of many. It's good to have it as a foundation, but if you make yourself do some of the old-timey ways, you learn things that you would never see if you were still stuck in OOP-land.

Just grow all your own hydroponic vegetables and get organic, free-range, and grass fed meat from farmer's markets and co-ops.

It's not that expensive or hard to set up. I'm even using my Raspbery Pi to manage the sprinkler and temperature controls for my plants.

Why does it feel like nothing will ever offer the same value as the nexus 5?
Still an amazing phone 3 years on, Plus saw a thread earlier about saving raw images so I'm looking into that.

Also pretty amazed at the battery life, I let the memes get to me after not using it for a while and was actually expecting 3 hours SoT.

So /g/, if Windows 10 sucks, what are the alternatives? Building my first PC and I've had an old laptop with windows 7 for as long as I can remember, and I'm pretty happy with it, but is Windows 10 really that bad? What should I go with instead? I just want things to work and be able to play games.

What should I do if I want to work as a programmer for a software company?

I'm 18 and just realized what I wanna work with. I've done some programming but I figure I need a degree to get a job. I've heard CS degrees are useless but I live in Sweden and maybe it's better here? If not, what should I do? I'm in my last year of high school.

I'm interested in a lot of the CS fields but making software for bank employees and similar sounds pretty boring and that seems pretty common. What do I do to get to work with something interesting? Is working for startups a good idea?

I'll tell you right now; if you want to work in software, you better get good at Math.
Particularly, discrete math, data structures, and theory of computation.
>>
>>53689257
I realize that and I think I'm pretty good at math. I have no trouble with it at all at least.

Got any resources for math related to software that I should learn?
>>
>>53689219
CS degrees aren't actually useless, that's a /g/ meme. But you could also become a software developer by majoring in electrical/computer engineering or math or physics or whatever and teaching yourself CS stuff on the side. Majoring in CS and teaching yourself engineering or advanced math (which isn't necessary for software development but definitely gives you an edge) is harder.

Is there a single board computer similar to the raspberry pi with gpio functionality that I can use with regular linux distros or even windows? Ubuntu Mate is nice, but I prefer the desktop software.

I did google it, but I didn't find anything.

That thread went by pretty quick.

Someone said something should be in the OP, but I couldn't find it.

If you have anything that should be in the OP then reply to this post.
>>
why web dev over general programming?
>>
>>53689541
I suppose because it's more specialised so you don't have to wade thru a huge number of replies which are not related to what you're interested.

Heck even webdev is a big enough subject, you may not be concerned with each reply, but there's more convergence in one topic, I suppose.

Even if they dont directly buy from these ads its demonstrated ads have a positive effects in sales long after the viewer was exposed.

hey /g/
why is using TPB considered a bad thing? I've been using it since '07 with no problems - I can't recall a time that it's let me down even once.

>>53688790
What specifically, in terms of quality? Like said, I've never had an issue with it before whether it be films, games, software, music, etc. Granted, my searches are usually pretty well seeded, so maybe I'm just not niche enough to have to worry about that...
