You should know everything in the beginner section and at least 3 from the core section before specializing. You could probably plough through most of this link in about a year if you did 16 hours a day but you'd want to kill yourself at the end of it.

I've been using vlc on windows for years with zero problems. On my linux box I usually get no audio after jumping to time using the scrollbar. What does /g/ use?

Hey guys, I'm looking for a change of career and network security has really sparked my interest. Is the CCENT even worth getting, or should I just study for the CCNA Routing & Switching and build my base off of that.
Any other noteable certifications I should consider acquiring? Mosty looking for good stepping stones to push myself into a decent position, I'm aware that senior positions come with time and a proven track record and have no problem starting from dirt.

There's really no point in skipping the CCENT if you have no experience and no current IT job.
You end up paying pretty much the same whether you take the CCENT then do the second half/CCNA test separate or whether you do it all together as CCNA.
Less dollars spent statistically if you do it in two parts.

I know this isn't tech support, but I'm trying to wrap my head around an issue;
I have 250mbps internet via a netgear cm500 modem. it gets 250+ regularly when directly connected.
with my TP Link TL-WR1043ND running DD-WRT v3.0-r28493 std, I only get about 160mbps
this is via gigabit ethernet, not wifi
running through a gigabit switch as well

any tips? I don't have any QoS or Firewall enabled, and the specs I can find don't suggest there should be any limitation... no VPNs or anything weird like that going on.

Get a better router/stop using wireless?
Find a nice AC router if you want high speeds. Mikrotik makes fantastic cheap enterprise level routers for consumers, however their current 802.11AC line do not come assembled, you get a raw board with no antennas. Those Asus routers are rather nice though.
You could also try Powerline adapters, but speeds vary depending on your wiring. Ethernet over Coax is a better option if your rooms are wired for Coax.

There is no 'main language'. If you want to do web dev and mobile apps both, however, learn HTML/CSS/Javascript, learn to use Phonegap and you're pretty much set.
