Yeah many times, I tend to over estimate how much factual knowledge I have and tend to talk about things I don't entirely understand.

I used to believe geekbench scores translate across different CPU architectures and that Trinity APUs had GCN GPU cores.

The important thing is to learn from your mistakes. If someone calls you out on something take note and go read wikipedia or something to verify that they are correct and not just talking out of their ass.

But don't fret over your mistakes too much, we all make them. We're human after all.

Hi there /g/

I'm currently in my second semester in college to become a computer systems technician.

Was wondering if any of you had any useful advice that a complete noob like me could take along with them?

Is that your end goal? Cuz you don't need any school to do that
>>
>>52643574
Not really, I plan on doing something more specialised later on. I just haven't had any prior experience dealing with computer networks, and I learn a lot better in a classroom environment.
>>
>>52643615
You are now aware that you only learn about 15% of what you need in the real world.

Why were the 80's such a glorious time for beautiful tech? The 90's went all colourful plastic, and now everything is minimalist.

>Why were the 80's such a glorious time for beautiful tech?

Protip: Japanese tech was usually really cheap to buy compared to domestic market tech.

For some reason the Japanese really had a knack for really.. TECHNICAL looking designs (which I fucking LOVE).

That's why you remember those decades that way.
Japanese tech was EVERYWHERE and with it Japanese design.

Now everything is produced in China and designed by globally thinking faggots in the EU or US and even the Japanese adjusted to that, at least for their stuff for export.

This means every design is averaged to hell while still trying to be up to date as fuck with the goal to appeal to as many potential buyers as possible.

Will Thinkpads from 2005 era be sustainable for web use in say the next the next ten-fifteen years? I have no real reason to buy another laptop as I only use it for office work and browsing. Just worried YouTube and new web technologies will put a strain on old processors and memory. What are your thoughts? Anyone using any system made before 2005?

Believe me, I wish they would, but JS, trackers and poor coding, with "optimizations" for newer ULV processors, old hardware that should be able to run basic websites will choke.

So /g/, headphone virtualization, yes or no? What exactly does it do?

I have some pretty good headphones (DT 770 Pro) and I'm wondering if this would make sound appear more... authentic and/or hi-fi.

>>
>>52643128
I tries to use DSP to emulate what sound would be like in a room with speakers.

If you want to get into the technical side of how it does this, it basically adds a bit of crosstalk. It's an old technique in the analog HiFi days for various reasons.

It's kind of a cool effect but it adds a feeling of degraded quality. Like you're suddenly using cheaper headphones.
>>
>>52643128
Uncheck that shit, all audio special effects and what not should all be disabled if you're using headphones

Hmm interesting. Yeah I tried watching some YouTube music videos and switching it on/off. It appears as though headphone virtualization makes things a bit more hollow sounding.

Since we're on the subject of audio, are any of these equalizer presets really worth using? I don't really know how to setup an equalizer to sound good.

What's the most stupid thing you ever did with your electronics?

>12 year old me gets ps1 for christmas
>Family talks about "wonders of technology" and "whoever builds those things must be a genius"
>Get idea
>Unscrew ps1 from case
>Broke a piece of it
>Tell my dad I accidentaly broke it
>"We could make another case out of wood."
>My dad's a woodworker, so he totally digged the idea
>Got a case made out of wood.
Now comes the stupid part:
>Told everyone at my school I made the thing, and that it even could play original ps1 games.
>No one believes me but I still made up shit about how I knew all these electrical parts and how to solder them.
>Kids came to me with their electronics and asked stupid shit about it, laughing at me trying to explain it to them.
>I only realised 4 years later that I was propably the most autistic kid at my school

FreeNAS is pretty cool, but 10GbE support is pretty weak

How is openbsd as a desktop OS. I've been looking at it and at freebsd but it seems openbsd has more out of the box support. I really like the ports collection that freebsd has though, Will I be able to expect a package collection as big as freebsd's on openbsd
