What's best to learn for back-end if I'm planning on freelancing? PHP/Wordpress seems to be getting a lot of attention but I see al the currys are really into it.

I want to build a desktop. The most intense thing I'll use it for is Dwarf Fortress. That's game that makes my laptop try to melt itself, but it has almost no graphics. Also the dev doesn't know how to parallelize so lots of cores won't help.
