I have been given the choice of picking between the following laptops as my christmas/going away to university present(electrical engineering major), and obviously less expensive is better.
>Surface 3 4gb ram/128gb emmc, with keyboard and pen - $673
>Surface Pro 3 i3, with keyboard and pen - $751
>Surface Pro 4 m3 or i5, with keyboard - $1004(m3) or $1101(i5)

The T450 would be nice as I know it would last and I could easily get inside of it to upgrade or repair, but it's also easily the heaviest and thickest choice. At the moment, it is my default unless the Surface 3 or the SP4 is just fucking amazing and I'd be retarded not to have it because of whatever reasons. I don't know, which is why I'm asking all of you right now as I have to pick today.
Post the storage and screen configs for the laptops. The t450 is not worth it if you're getting a 1600x900 TN panel and spinning storage.

Yeah, that's the issue. The T450 is the shittiest i5 configuration with the 1366x768, 500gb HDD and 4gb ram, and I think it's actually overpriced compared to what they actually go for from lenovo.
All of the surfaces are 128gb storage and 4gb ram with their nice screens that they all come with. the surface 3 is only 1920x1280 but that's still nice on a 10.8", not sure if that would be nice as a primary computer, though and I'd probably rather put in the extra cash for that SP3 i3 since it has a much nicer resolution and screen size, actual SSD instead of emmc, much faster charging time etc..
the XPS and the MBA are sort of the same flavor. XPS gives you a nicer screen, while the MBA gives you 2 more hours on the battery life.(14 hours total) but using a MBA in an electrical engineering major is probably not that fun.
I actually don't know anything about the Yoga 14, but I think if I was going for a thinkpad, I'd rather just stick with the real deal.
Thinkpad T450. If you're EE then more ports are better for the old tech you might be interfacing with. Sometimes labs use RS-485 or RS-232 on com ports for controlling robots or reading analog signals but I might be old now and maybe they use USB. The keyboard is the comfiest out of all of the laptops you've posted. If not that one go full consumer and get the Macbook Air, you wouldn't regret either purchase much if at all.
The yoga 14 really isn't worth it unless you're lugging around a Cintiq right now. All of the surface laptops are not comfy typers. You'll need a bluetooth keyboard if you take them.

I've recently been working on creating a high-efficiency, high-frequency, high-power air-cored resonant transformer (tesla coil), for the lulz. I plan to have an operating frequency of 15 Mhz, which is obviously beyond the range of standard semi-conductors, so I'll use valves, an operating power of 5kW, it's currently on the planning phase, but I've already figured the tube I'll use, how I'll cool it, the schematic, basically. But the issue I have is basically actually fitting the 5kW into the secondary of the transformer, which will be small since it operates at such a high res, it ought to be small, which just adds to the problem. Any idea how to keep it at a reasonable temperature, /g/?
