Material Design isn't new or meme. It's Google's design language to give everything a somewhat similar look on their platforms.

Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

IRC connection details:
Server: chat.freenode.net:6667 (no SSL, 6697 for SSL) - Channel: #flt
If you don't have an IRC client (which you should), go to https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/flt to use IRC on a web client.

Visit the Friendly GNU/Linux Thread/Website:

I can recommend the Linux Fundamentals series by Daniel Robbins:
http://www.funtoo.org/Linux_Fundamentals,_Part_1
also you might read up on ssh if you don't know it already, that's basically the must-have tool on a phone.

In terms of direct competitors (13" ultrabooks) I like the XPS 13 way better, the display just looks too good.
The logo/LEDs aren't that big of an issue, just leave them off and put a sticker on the back and you're good.
>>
The only thing I don't really like about them is that I can't go to a store to buy one and test it out. I don't like making a blind online purchase at something that costs at least $999
>>
>>54327747

The XPS has nicer bezels but the RBS has a better screen. If the XPS was cheaper (which you'd think it would be being from a bigger company) it'd beat the RBS in every way though.

No way maybe in 2k11, 2k12 but those bezels nowadays on the macbook pro are hideous. Apple is to stubborn to do a refresh to. Pixel is gorgeous. I also love the utilitarian look of IBM thinkpads

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
