Never had any contact with linux but since I don't really care about this old laptop, I'm giving it a try.
I'm about to try installing linux mint 17.2 cinnamon. Will it work driver vise for this conf (it having ati and stuff)? Anything I should give special attention to? Will card readers, bluetooth and stuff like that work?

It probably will, go ahead friend.

should work. I mean that hardware is rather old, but I've installed Mint on a plethora of machines ranging from old as shit pentium 4's desktops for grandma, and newer stuff like my current build. (using AMD r9 390)

Everything worked out of the box with no issues.
>>
Cheers guys!
I'm off to try it now, wish me luck!

>What is IPFS?
It's basically BitTorrent on steroids.

>why would one use it
* Distributed, decentralized filesharing (for now - ipfs is merely the communication protocol, and additional applications can exist on top of it).
* You can have a mutable address (i.e. always points to the latest version of a site), or a static address (points to a specific file). Yes, you can host sites over IPFS.
* Peers are found fast for new downloads. You don't need to wait that much to start a download.
* You can watch your animu while it downloads, I watched few episodes that way and it didn't even buffer.

>how to upload a single file
$ ipfs add ./$file
Access it at localhost:8080/ipfs/$outputted-hash
>how to upload a dir
$ ipfs add -r ./$dir
Access it at localhost:8080/ipfs/$last-outputted-hash
>how to make the thing mutable
$ ipfs name publish ./$file-or-dir-hash
Access it at localhost:8080/ipns/$output-hash-aka-peerid (it's ipNs not ipFs)
To update, publish another hash and it will be available at the same IPNS address.

>BitTorrent on stereoids
I thought we agreed to stop with this.

Yes, it has similarities with.torrent and is even directly influenced by it. And it completely subsumes torrents for file sharing purposes. But the interesting features come from its possible applications to things other than file sharing.

Just to get it out of the way: Yes, it's encrypted. No, it's not anonymous.

Does anyone else think that some new thing in science or medicine will allow us to live forever (barring an accident of some kind) within our lifetime?

Will not be allowed to happen until we can colonise other planets. We would run out of room in 2 years if we only had Earth to live on

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

You can run the installer in Windows 7 compatibility mode, I managed to set battery thresholds on my X220 so at least that works.

There is no end user advantage to install Linux. It's crapware for nerds who don't use their computers for work, enjoyment or gaming. It looks like a toy for 1337 nerds to pretend they're doing something deep when it's a bunch of nonsense. Unless they're doing some weird security breaching to spy on other peoples porn collection.

Give me any a good non-nerd reason that linux can put do work that windows doesn't, and why the average person should care. There's a reason that universities and business doesn't use linux.

If linux is great, then what can it do that windows doesn't and how is it better than being a waste of time?

Amd tries but they can't compete. The market is cornered by Intel and the consumer suffers for it.

Which ever one works for you. To break it down

>Debian
Stable, great installer, moderately easy to use. Bad repos, bad package manager.

>Ubuntu
Also stable, semi decent installer. Extremely easy to use, fork of debian with the same repo and package problems.

>Redhat distros
Usually bleeding edge/unstable, somewhat moderately easier to use, good packages and good manager.

>Arch
Bleeding edge, unstable. Best repos and software out there. Not even slightly easy to use coming from Windows or another simple OS.

>Gentoo
Arch with better documentation, everything is DYI, self compiled, enjoy your computer overheating 24/7 if you're on a shitbox. Upside is if something breaks, it's almost always your fault and not something elses.

Do NOT bother with meme forks like Chakra, Antergos etc
