CMU has a HUGE push towards functional programming and parallel programming.

The guy who invented the parallel scan algorithm among others (Blelloch https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~guyb/papers/Ble93.pdf) teaches a required class 15-210, which, on top of the survey course in discrete math, is considered the pinnacle of the school's CS degree.

Similarly, the dude who made SML (a functional language) was a professor at CMU (not sure if he still is).

15-210 is a great class and the website is phenomenal if anyone wants to learn parallel algorithms:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~15210/
another great parallelism class is 15-418 (parallel programming rather than algorithms):
http://15418.courses.cs.cmu.edu/

>both anti-modular

LOL WUT?

>and anti-parallel by its very nature.

Nope. Look up an old language called Prograph. Fully OOP and inherently parallel because it was a dataflow language. The company folded before multi-processor / multi-core systems became common. But any operation, at any level of granularity, could be run on multiple cores once all the data was available to that op. This would have been trivial for the compiler+runtime to do automatically for the programmer.

OOP has nothing what so ever to do with whether or not code can be made to run in a parallel fashion.
>>
It would be ideal to have both, lisps balance that well but I guess being as strongly parallel as possible has huge benefits.

Fun project idea for you:

- Pi Zero
- Lipo battery
- 3.3v to 5v booster & charger: https://www.adafruit.com/products/2465
- Wifi dongle

Basically, cut the power consumption as low as you can go, make it a Wifi access point, and write some basic daemons in C to monitor the battery pack voltage via the GPIO through an RC charging circuit. I get six hours out of mine so far.

Currently have it mounted in a 3-ring binder. Working on getting it compact enough to fit in a wallet. Also working on a web interface (python + Django) for controlling the wifi and starting/stopping various network services, and a small oled display to show basic status.

Fun times.

>last "real job" ended a year ago
>got really fucking burned out doing enterprise
>been working on hobby projects, some contracting work, conferences, open source, regaining sanity
> my insurance sucks
> must get normie job to afford to live

Just got off the phone with a recruiter. Two companies she has can afford my rate (what I got paid when i left my last job).

Gripes:
Both companies have coding assessments. I get that.

Company A has an hour long assessment, you turn in whatever you get done and then that's it. Reasonable.

Company B has a 24 hour long assessment. They expect me to break my dick working on this project.

Why the fuck does this company think that I have nothing better to do than dick around with their "assessment" for a whole day? I'm not getting paid. I either have to take off my contracting gigs, or spend vacation time working on this. I get coding for an hour and then that's it, but 24 hours is basically asking for me to do a marathon.

I guess it's possible that a skilled person could do the work in less than 24 hours, but you can be damned if I'm going to put in anything less than my best.

This kind of shit is why I burned out. I was making a handsome paycheck and then one day I just couldn't do it anymore. I still haven't really recovered from that, and now I'm going to go broke if I don't start working soon.

What makes the interview process more bearable for you all?

I once applied for a company which required an 8 hour coding assessment. What it turned out to be was basically writing a linked list class in Java. That really says a lot about the type of people who work there.
>>
Stop taking things too seriously outset. 24 hour coding assignments are 1 day assignments. Don't ever work more that 8 hours per day. Don't spend more than 2 on that assignment itself unless you actually need to learn some new solution to implement it.
