>WhatsApp founder Jan Koum announced Monday that the company is dropping the service’s annual subscription fee in an effort to remove the barriers some users faced in using the service.

>“It really doesn’t work that well,” Koum said Monday, speaking at the DLD conference in Munich. He noted that while a buck a year might not sound like much, access to credit cards is not ubiquitous. “We just don’t want people to think at some point their communication to the world will be cut off.”

>Until now WhatsApp has been free for the first year and 99 cents for additional years. (It will stop charging subscription fees immediately but it will likely be a few weeks to fully take the payments infrastructure out of all versions of the app. And, in case you are wondering, you won’t be able to get back your buck if you have already paid for this year.)

>Naturally, people might wonder how we plan to keep WhatsApp running without subscription fees and if today’s announcement means we’re introducing third-party ads. The answer is no. Starting this year, we will test tools that allow you to use WhatsApp to communicate with businesses and organizations that you want to hear from. That could mean communicating with your bank about whether a recent transaction was fraudulent, or with an airline about a delayed flight. We all get these messages elsewhere today – through text messages and phone calls – so we want to test new tools to make this easier to do on WhatsApp, while still giving you an experience without third-party ads and spam.

>This strategy might sounds familiar. It’s the same idea behind Facebook Messenger, the company’s other standalone messaging service.

>the company is dropping the service’s annual subscription fee

Did anyone ever pay for it? I always got those "WE WILL START CHARGING YOU SOON" messages, but never actually paid a dime.

Also I can't leave the botnet because it's my main form of communication with friends/family. I won't go preaching Telegram to them either.

Let's be honest: this is the most harmful shit of all. Nobody really knows it as much as he really thinks he does, which is why anything written in it is so leaky and barely clanking along. That's why we're STILL finding errors in tiny-ass coreutil programs even now.

Let's do ourselves a collective favor and drop this shit already.

Because it was written in the 90s.

To do a complete rewrite of the site would be a massive undertaking.

Back when I was new in /g/, I thought /dpt/ was full of cool guys and geeks who can program like a pro.
I was actually pretty intimated by these threads because I was just a newbie programmer and I thought you guys were master hackers or something.
Then I actually lurked in these threads for a while and realized you're all just a bunch of faggots like /v/ and /b/ who do literally nothing but shitpost all day.
I really thought you guys were cool.
I am very disappointed.

BSD, Mac, HURD, Plan9, or anything that doesn't run under Linux kernel, get out! This is only for OS running on Linux kernel, although we accept those who doesn't use GNU coreutils or glibc (busybox/musl libc, such as Alpine Linux).

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Does anyone else feel like the current generation of AMD cards are secretly superior but everyone's so used to the prior era's of AMD fuck ups in both the CPU and GPU market that they are too far down the Nvidia rabbithole to admit it?

>360
Re-branded 260 with higher clock speeds and 2GB of VRAM, priced similarly at release, with street prices being closer to what the superior 260X used to be

>370
Re-branded 265/7850 with higher clocks - again, similar MSRP, but with the superior 270 diminishing and no replacement released, its prices haven't gone down as much as they should be.

>380
285 Re-brand at cheaper MSRP and 4Gb available. Good budget card, especially against NV's 960, albeit cut-down memory bus from the 280, and barely performing better. It also has a fairly high power-consumption towards Nvidia's offering.

>390
290 with higher clocks, lower MSRP and more (actually as advertised :^)) VRAM. Nothing bad here as well, but again, power-consumption is an issue among the 970, especially when overclocked.

>390X
290X with higher clocks and similar to the 290. Can match or get close to a 980 at a much lower price point, but in contrast has significantly higher power-consumption, which in excessive use, can not only contribute towards your power bill, but might also require a new PSU purchase, which may void its price advantage in the first place. Also OC's worse on average, even considering Maxwell's shitty scaling with clockspeed.

>Fury
Cut-down Fiji, can beat a 980 but is a good leap from the 980Ti whilst the difference in price is rather marginal. Likely outclassed by the 390X and Nano.

>Nano
Good card, especially after the price drop. Fully-fledged Fury X at lower clocks, which unfortunately only hovers it around 980-level and barely even beats a 390X, but at least it's pretty efficient, at least until you overclock it. Good for small form-factor builds, not so good as a budget GPU.

>Fury X
Can get close or match a 980Ti around similar price points, but contains less VRAM, uses more power and doesn't overclock as well. Quite a disappointment, at least for its price.

Overall, AMD's offerings are decent, but definitely not outshining Nvidia's. We'll see about Polaris.

All useful programs are I/O. Yes.

And all useful Functional programs ultimately provide I/O, just with a different conceptualisation of how to represent I/O in the codebase.

>>52485498
It's a function of an I/O of X to an I/O of Y. It is up to the external environment to "perform" those I/O actions.

Garbage in garbage out

I figured the io.js/node.js split would have killed it, but it didn't. Node will be popular until javascript gets a competitor in the browser. People don't like learning programming languages, and will try to use the same one everywhere, even if it doesn't belong.
>>
>>52484232
Pretty much all Node.js project that serves web sites uses Express.js.

Unless they can quickly organize a fork, Node.js on web backend is fucked with IBM flushing Express.js down the toilet.
