There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux
Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Ubuntu 16 comes out on Thursday. I am excited. If you want to upgrade, a clean installation is recommended, so put all your valuable stuff on the cloud and then install Ubuntu 16.

Not a preview, it is a release candidate. There is no difference between this and the final installer, except some package updates to fix bugs. You can also install updates through the system updater.
It is very stable at this point, but YMMV

ITT: Post those programs you miss from your more pleb days on Windows, that you think would be a good addition to repos. I've been using almost exclusively Linux for about three years now, and I love it but I still miss things.
Foobar - easy, minimal, no bullshit. Easier to configure than any media player I've used on Linux (currently use Audacious), especially when working with network fileshares for libraries.
Photoshop - I don't even edit photos often, but goddamn is GIMP a hassle. Weird hotkeys and all that.
MKV tools/extract/gui tools in general - I'm not trying to learn an entire fucking book of syntax and options for the command line, I think video tools are by far the most helpful thing to have GUIs for.
