New to /ptg/? Have an enquiry? Consult the wiki before asking redundant questions

Or update it yourself if you have a problem with it. Then check Google. If you can't find an adequate answer, ask here.

Remember the following:
>tracker staff are known to browse and post in these threads - think twice before offering to trade, buy or sell invites and accounts here
>the same goes for publicly offering or accepting invites - even if staffers aren't watching, an anon may still report you
>around 60% of posters here chat shit - don't make any claims about sites based on "something you read here once" (this especially applies if a poster has a name/trip attached)

Only /g/ refers to the BSD family as "BSD". If you asked an OpenBSDer if he "used BSD", he would probably kill you.

Spare me the pedantry please.

Is there a better way to refer to all of the BSDs at once?

So, my LiveWire power strip was making a rattling noise so I took it apart and I found what was making the noise: a rectangular piece of translucent yellow plastic.

Anybody know what the purpose of this is, or if it would hurt anything if I removed it?

Also, is there any benefit to EMI shielding the housing of the power strip with copper shielding tape or is that just dumb?

Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Currently running arch, but this is looking tempting, what kind of changes can I expect? Is it worth it? Pros/Cons over arch? Ubuntu has been looking pretty slick lately.

I'm personally switching to Ubuntu 16.04 from Arch because although I like the AUR compared to Ubuntu's annoying PPA system, updating software from the AUR takes too long when I have to keep compiling it.

Software from Arch's official repos are faster to install compared to Ubuntu though.
>>
>>54120178
any other reasons you want to make the switch?
>>
There is alot more community support from Ubuntu, if you have a problem people don't expect you to know how to fix it yourself. They will guide you step by step most of the time to solve a problem.

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experienceâ„¢

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
