Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Except there is no evidence, she's been framed by the corrupt speaker of the house who is as a matter of fact facing charges for involvement in the Lava Jato scandal. Dilma faces no charges.

What is happening here right now is a coup d'ètat funded by international powers to destroy Brazil's sovereignty. And the true working people is against it, as seen in multiple protests, which outnumber the white americanist elite protests at least 2 to 1. Pic related.

The government changing doesn't mean the government's stance will change.

The government is not one monolithic entity, every government has competing and parallel interests, even North Korea or Zimbabwe.

People confuse the legislative and/or executive part of the government with the government as a whole. The administrative side of the government generally runs semi-autonomously from the executive.

Sure the executive hands down its policy and programmes, but they don't micro-manage the individual departments and organisations, and with the debt/deficit situation in Brazil what it is, I can't imagine Microsoft lobbyists being able to weasel their way in just yet.

Hey guys. I just wanted to pop on by and thank whichever anon who wrote this bash script a few days ago. It was absolutely baller and got the job done.

It was for searching through my images folder for pictures above 1920x1080 resolution and creating symlinks to another folder (to make it easier to parse through potential wallpapers)

#!/bin/bash
#
# requires imagemagick
# set MIN_WIDTH/MIN_HEIGHT to whatever you want

# sets first/second argument to directories you want to use
img_dir=/data/Pictures/Internet
wall_dir=/data/Pictures/PotentialWalls

# self explanatory
MIN_WIDTH=1980
MIN_HEIGHT=1080

# file extensions to check for (separated by | because they will be used in regex)
FILE_TYPES='jpg|png'

# this is done to allow for filenames with spaces
IFS="
"

if [ -d "$img_dir" ] && [ -d "$wall_dir" ]
then
for img in `find "$img_dir" -regextype posix-egrep -iregex ".*($FILE_TYPES)"`; do
width=`identify -format "%w" "$img"`
height=`identify -format "%h" "$img"`
action=Skipped
[ $width -ge $MIN_WIDTH ] && [ $height -ge $MIN_HEIGHT ] && ln -sr "$img" "$wall_dir" && action=Added
# NOTE: if $wall_dir already contains a file with the same name, it will be skipped

echo "$action $img (${width}x$height)"
done

else echo "$0 [directory to scan for images] [directory to make symlinks]"
fi

So thank you, anon guy. You're really cool, and I learned something about bash. I might write my own scripts from now on, I didn't realize they were so useful
>>
>>54111162
I'm program a lot and gcc 5.0+ allows for much, much easier integrated regex support, cleaner flags, cleaner makes, better standard C library support (for newer C++ libraries), and just makes/makefiles in general.

And I'm pretty sure there's a few (not many, but a few) programs that I've wanted to use that require gcc 5.0+/gcc5.0+ dependent libs/packages.

I'd compile it myself but it's the one thing that's a monumental fucking hassle for linux.
>>
Is trying to execute a GPU passthrough on an already installed Debian system a fool's errand, or is it actually doable without much hassle?

Just wondering if I can get rid of my small Windows partition forever already or if that'll have to wait
>>
>>54111244
I was wondering if you were going to reply along those lines. I'm kind of surprised you are using mint, it would seem to make everything more difficult for someone in your position. Why not use fedora or something more upstream?
>>
>>54111260
I've just been too busy(lazy) to sit down and do it, and even though changing distros is pretty trivial, it's not something I want to sit down and configure for a day or two. I'm too deep at this point. And the login screen and Cinnamon are fucking awesome.

It's not nearly as bad for me as it could be because I have a server that I can use for the features, but it's inconvenient.

When Mint 18 comes out I'm switching to either Ubuntu, Fedora, or that.
>>
>>54109338

Free software IS political. How new to this are you?
>>
>>54111187
that's really great anon.

i've only done a few simple bash scripts myself, but they can be really handy.

though i'm not doing much to justify making a lot, or really complicated ones, maybe i should try doing some more.

Mint is a cancerous spyware-based derivative of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is a cancerous spyware-based derivative of Debian.
Debian is an outdated freedom-respecting operating system that I use, and get irritated with it's outdated packages often.

To be honest, if you want to pop your Gentoo meme cherry without wasting time on the painful installation process, just do the super easy install of Calculate Linux. It's a pre-compiled package of Gentoo, so you can get started on Use-flags right away no problem. The software is super up-to-date.

in order to ask this I must propose a situation.
I have a wacom tablet for drawing. In order to map its inputs to one monitor, I must go through xinput and find its input values

typically it shows up as
⎜   ↳ Wacom Bamboo 2FG 4x5 Pen stylus             id=18    [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜ ↳ Wacom Bamboo 2FG 4x5 Pen eraser id=19 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Wacom Bamboo 2FG 4x5 Pad pad id=20 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Wacom Bamboo 2FG 4x5 Finger touch id=21 [slave pointer (2)]

we can see that its input values are all just successive numbers.

Is there an operator in bash that would allow me to, say, iterate through a command, except changing a variable from say x...x(n) until it reaches x(n)?
for example,
the typical sequence of commands I run is
xsetwacom set 18 MapToOutput VGA
xsetwacom set 19 MapToOutput VGA
xsetwacom set 20 MapToOutput VGA
xsetwacom set 21 MapToOutput VGA

what I want would essentially be
xsetwacom set 18..21 MapToOutput VGA

and it would run the command 4 times, incrementing until it reached 21
does this exist? I know I could do this with a for/while loop, but it would be neat if such an operator existed

How do I add something to my Path environment variables so that a script can see it?
>>
>>54113526
Well there is only one PATH environment variable and that is by convention where things like the shell look for commands to run. It is made up of comman seperated entries so to add a directory to your PATH you would run eg
PATH="/opt/mybin:$PATH"
which would prepend to PATH. If you just want to creat another enviroment variable run eg
export MY_VAR="some value"
, the assignment creates the variable and "export" makes the variable visible to child processes, like your script.

Apparently it's not recommended use Intel's driver for newer (post 2007) hardware any more according to:

Only because it us not fsf endorsed does not mean it is nonfree. In fact, in some cases the dfsg are more strict than the four freedoms.
All distros allow theoretical access to nonfree sources. The problem that causes debian to not be fsf endorsed is that they make it easy and show users how to enable contrib and nonfree. This is a problem for some people but it is very sane, since the debian kernel is deblobbed debian is even more sane than fedora. It is completely libré ootb.
>>
>>54112500
Stallman has said himself something to the effect that he could recommend Debian to anyone who he knew wouldn't install the non-free software it offers. Naturally, by their philosophies that means it can't be recommended at large.

I imagine people will ask me for source but alas, I can't be bothered to dig it up. It was on the OpenBSD mailing list for anyone motivated to find it. De Raadt is charming as always in the relevant thread.

>>54118899
go with 64 bit. Probably matters in the sense that 64 bit binaries will not run in a 32 bit system [citation needed], which is kinda important as that's what most aplications are developed for now. Nothing speaks against 64 if the hardware supports it.

also

>>54118956

>>54118949
Not really, I don't recommend it. Don't use tar for that, if you plan on running backup more than once.
I have a tiny script that mounts a Veracrypt image and rsync into that. The problem here is that the size is fixed on image creation, so you'll have to deal with that.
>>
>>54118980
So I wouldnt even need rsync? I'm getting a bit lost, I thought rsync might have a configurable flag to backup to an archive file.

>>54118997
I wouldnt run it often, just after I've made considerable change or before major updates maybe. I just want something I can easily restore in case.

rsync IIRC can't write to a file, but it sure as hell can backup your system better than tar ever could.
