Think of it of MSN Messenger (ICQ?) meets SMS plus you're always online.
Get a midrange smartphone, you truly don't need more for whatsapp. Just make sure it has a screen big enough for you to read.
Also, be careful with the contacts you have in your phone as all of them will show up in whatsapp.
Finally beware when you open a message (called chats in 'app) as people will be able to tell whether have you read the message or not and some people get anal if you read the message but don't answer it.

You install Arch. For the very simple reason that you don't have to compile shit yourself and you learn linux rapidly. It's pretty much learn linux or die - the distro.

I listen to a lot of music, typically in lossless audio formats.
Assuming I only have the intention of using one output to headphones, what could I gain by using a sound card over the integrated sound? Would the quality be greater?
Assuming there would be some noticable difference, what are the options for sound cards, preferably below $300?
Do they work with any software? I'm using GNU/Linux.

Get an external usb dac+amp. Inside of a pc is very electrically noisy. Schiit modi+magni is good for $200, but remember, your headphones are the most important link in the chain.
Arch, Debian or fedora?
I can use Linux fairly well... I got a lenovo 700 and broadcom wireless chip and an 940m which has proven to be problematic with Debian and fedora but I am working on finding a solution.

Finding help for Arch is easier than for any other Linux distro out there. Easier than Ubuntu even.
