The only thing "linux" about android is the kernel. You can actually run most android apps without using the linux kernel which makes the claim that Android is Linux false

Have any of you /g/entoomen ever experienced or heard of this before? My 2600k/GTX580 PC has always run a little warm, but never enough to significantly impact the temperature of the room, even under load. Over the past year, this has changed. Now, even under a light load the temperature of my room increases noticeably. According to the laws of thermodynamics, this isn't an issue with my CPU/GPU coolers themselves; the problem is the sheer amount of heat being generated, not how efficiently it is being pulled off the PC components.

So, I was thinking of some experimentation with Linux. I used Windows for my whole life. But I would stop using computers before I would 'upgrade' to NSAware.
So, what is a good distro to start with that can actually replace Windows? I mostly do heavy browsing, editing/converting multimedia files and everything related to webdesign. I already use free programs like GIMP and FF except for Office 2003.
My PC runs a 3770K OC / 16 GB / 780 Ti 4K, will this make any problems? Especially the desktop resolution. I'm planning on a second 4K screen later. How are the drivers on Ubuntu?
I still play games which is the only reason I still work with 8.1.
Windows sounds like a better fit for you tbqh
Differences between distros are mostly minor and basically include:
>what packages (software/programs) you get installed out of the box
>what packages are in the repositories (what can be installed easily via terminal, however there's not much variance here so don't worry)
>how new the packages are (major difference here between distros)
>non-free software (Debian disables it from the start, Trisquel might not allow it at all, Arch, Gentoo, etc. don't care)
>community (this is actually huge, the forum, wiki, and IRC channel related to your distro is pretty important for you to learn and get help with things)
>installer (this is very minor but it has lead to people thinking Arch and Gentoo are leet hacker shit, however Arch has third party installers that are easy to use such as Architect and Gentoo has a variant called Funtoo which I think is easier to install but I haven't tried it)
Personally I recommend Arch.
Not sure how comfortable you are with partitioning, OP, but if you have / and /home on separate partitions you can distro-hop a bit more easily. All your personal data is mostly on /home so you can just overwrite / when installing a new distro.
However you don't NEED to distro hop. For example, if you installed Arch with Architect and then thought it was too hard to use, chances are your issue is specific to whatever DE you chose. You can just install another and it'll feel like a whole new OS to you.

I know this may not be the place to ask this, but I recently got a hold of an Osborne.
It's fully functional. The only problem is my grandfather only kept WordStar, SuperCalc and the MBASIC, CBASIC disks. Sadly he threw away all the other disks.
Does anyone on this board know about the Osborne? Do you know what a good price for a 5 1/4 floppy drive is or where the best place to buy one is? I've never handled a computer of this vintage before, but I would like to run Colossal Cave at the very least.

Wish my grandparents had that laying around, they tossed out all of their 286 and older equipment right before I started getting into it.
The Osborne did not use PC compatible disks, instead they used 90k single-sided disks, which you may or may not be able to create using special software on a PC.
If it's possible, I'd recommend sourcing a Pentium or late-model 486 box with both a 5.25'' drive plus a 3.5'' floppy drive and/or an Ethernet controller as a file transfer box, you might also be able to transfer files via serial, but my experience with CP/M systems is pretty limited.

i want to expand my limitate storage ( actually 1TB + 4TB raid1 NAS) so i decided to buy another HDD to stick in my main rig.
my 1TB one is a WDblue 7200 rpm 64MB cache.
in your opinion what sould i do?
a) buy another 1TB WDblue and make a raid0
b) buy a 2TB WDred because "muh 5 years warranty"
c) buy HGST 2TB enterprise series that costs as much as wd red but it sounds like a fucking jet engine

Is an internal HDD like a 4/6TB WD Red/WD Blue/Hitachi Deskstar NAS Edition a reliable way to store movies and shows? I don't feel like I am at the point to use a full-blown NAS.

there's no unit for experience that would make sense to answer with, OP. You need to know enough to turn your idea into something real.
This is like asking how much of a natural language you need to know to get by in a country. It really depends on what you're doing. Are you directing a highly technical team, or picking up trash? Or are you just vacationing for a week?
And even if we nailed this down, how would you want us to answer "How much of ____ language do I need to know"? Is there a unit that we both know about that would make sense?
So there's no answer. The chances are you need to know more, but this is all just the necessary prerequisite; you need sufficient cause, and it sounds like you don't know what you're trying to build, so you don't have sufficient cause.

I'm sick of my 2nd Gen. Ipod Touch. It's slow as hell after all these years and need a replacement. I was looking at the Samsung Player 5.0 today as a replacement. Looks pretty cool. Does /g/ recommend it over the newer iPod Touch/ any other touchscreen media player? I don't have a touchscreen smartphone because they're all shit. I usually just stick to touchscreen media players and stuff like that.
