Nice thread OP. I like how you had the original idea to equate fan color with PC speed. Very nice.

Does it makes sense to port all your aliases as bash scripts in your
/usr/local/bin/
directory so that Alt+F2 or dmenu acknowledges their existence?

sure why not it's your computer do whatever will make your life better
>>
Now what would be the use of that?

Lets say you make an alias for
apt-get install
wouldn't it be just as fast just to write it in your terminal? what kind of alias would be useful in the dmenu?
It just never occured to me, I have never tried opening anything like that with the dmenu.

>wouldn't it be just as fast just to write it in your terminal?
Yeah, but then I wouldn't have to clutter up my desktop with another terminal window

>what kind of alias would be useful in the dmenu?
Well, for example I had an i3 bindsym that did the following:
bindsym Mod4+Shift+y exec echo 'youtube-dl "'`gpaste get 0`'"' > yt.sh ; exec echo mpv --quiet ~/pr/done.mp3 \*`gpaste get 0`\* >> yt.sh ; exec xterm -e bash yt.sh

bindsym Mod4+Shift+s exec echo 'youtube-dl --extract-audio' "'`gpaste get 0`'"' > yt.sh ; exec echo mpv --quiet ~/pr/done.mp3 \*`gpaste get 0`\* >> yt.sh ; exec xterm -e bash yt.sh

Which would instantly create a new xterm window that I could shove off to the side and be audibly alerted when it was finished downloading and if I was careful to only copy the end of the Youtube URL, then it would automatically play the video when it was done as well.

Since youtube-dl commands don't seem to do anything by themselves in dmenu, it might be useful to port this command to the /usr/local/bin since it makes use of a bash file and I think it seems to respect the actions of bash files more, since I've had no problems with my bash script for downloading the latest episode of The Biggest Problem in the Universe
#!/bin/sh

EPISODE_NUMBER=`cat /home/anon/.episode_num`
NEXT_EPISODE=`expr $EPISODE_NUMBER + 1`

xterm -e links https://traffic.libsyn.com/biggestproblem/BiggestProblemInTheUniverse${NEXT_EPISODE}.mp3
wget -nc https://traffic.libsyn.com/biggestproblem/BiggestProblemInTheUniverse${NEXT_EPISODE}.mp3 && echo $NEXT_EPISODE > /home/anon/.episode_num

What is the best way to hide a text file on some kind of external device?

I need something that can behave like a flashdrive. Also what is the best form of encryption and how can I do encrypt a text file?

Any other ways to ensure that nobody but me will be able to access the text file?

Pic related are keys for homephones which are used to open apartment doors in a lot of eastern block countries. I learned recently that you can somehow hide information on it but have yet to figure out how to do it.

NOT OP, I realize that it would take all of that to "do it right," but is there not a really simple way to do it? I want to imagine there is a program you just start up, configure a user account through a wizard, and then you just port-forward the necessary port so it works over the internet and you're good to go.

What do you use /g/?

Why do people talk about linux as a viable option for regular people when it ALWAYS has crippling bugs such as no wifi connection or intermittent wifi disconnections or just random shit like refusing to install stuff?

Oh and everything is hardware specific and there are 50000 kernels and distros and whatever, so it's impossible to find help on google.

Why are these "linux is user friendly and doesn't make you waste shitloads of time on IT problems" lies perpetuated on /g/?

If you can't figure out how to install Linux, then you deserve to use your botnet. There's literally a walk through on every distro website. In most cases it works right out of the box.

I'm pretty good with computers, I work primarily with windows server systems but for shits and giggles I installed ubuntu on one of my drives the other day.
1. Nvidia drivers won't work. Makes me disable x server. Let's how to do that. Disable x server and reboot. Now my login screen won't work. Find out there is a bug with ubuntu 15s log in and full disk encryption after disabling x server.
2. Install 14 lts and use synaptic to get Nvidia package. Still won't work. Turns out I have to blacklist the noveuao drivers. Okay I do that, get graphics working.
Now there is no sound. Ubuntu will only recognize my NVIDIA HDMI output as the only soundcard. After going through hours of fixes and forun.browsing I say gg and go back to wondows.
I'm sure it's not this bad for everyone, but fuck any OS that takes that much peeconfiguring

TLDR; I am a PS4 owner and thinking about getting a PC.

As a long time console user, PS1->4. I am considering getting a PC to play some games on the off chance they do get ported over and to play some multiplats like Deus Ex at higher settings since it seems I can get those games for cheap or
free
.

I am just worried about one thing, I currently enjoy games at 30fps and do not see a problem with this frame rate at all. I am worried that once I go 60fps I won't be able to go back and enjoy the other exclusives on my PS4.

How big of a problem is this for people who idort? How much money do I really need to spend on my PC as well? Keep in mind framerate isn't a big issue for me but if I do purchase a PC I want to see a really significant upgrade in graphics.

I've been using windows my entire life. I've been using windows 7 since its release, when I switched to it from xp. Since windows 7's release, microsoft has released shit OS after shit OS. I've come to accept Microsoft is likely never going to release another decent os again, and that after years of clinging to the same OS, it's time to move onto anything else. (Except osx or anything made by crapple)

So basically, ive used windows 7 years, have a decent amount of experience with osx, and have 0 experience with linux. I want to switch over from Windows to linux, but have no experience. I'm fine with starting from scratch, but still want to be able to play vidya, edit vids, and produce music like I do on my pc. My main worries are compatibility, and just how much better or worse linux objectively is for
A) Music production (my daw is fl 12)
B) Video editing (im a vegas fag)
C) Gaming (I use steam becuz y not its ez)

What flavor should i look into, what should I research and familiarize myself with beforehand, and what should I prepare my anus for?

[Pic completely unrelated, its my TT. Only pic o have on le new phone ))),,;:]

Objectively worse at either of those, since your choice of software is much slimmer. Better from the standpoint that you won't be dealing with MS bullshit.
