So, AMD Polaris and NVIDIA Pascal are coming out soon, what's /g/'s thoughts on the upcoming graphics cards?
318 posts and 26 images submitted.
>>
Pascal will debut in April, and should hit store shelves in mid June, so nVidia will be first to market. Polaris is expected around August, IIRC.

My ancient Radeon 6950 just shit the bed on me, forcing me to upgrade. I was planning to wait for the new cards to drop this summer to upgrade, but this forced my hand. So I purchased an eVGA GTX 950 SSC+ on Amazon for $75 after their $80 instant gift card for signing up with their credit card, so it takes the bitter taste out of my mouth. I'd have hated to spent more money, then have the new cards out with the die shrink shit all over my now older card. So I'll likely use the GTX 950 as a stop-gap until the fall when Zen/Kaby Lake debut to upgrade my entire system with a newer card.

>Pascale
16nmFF from TSCM
Refreshed Maxwell architecture (no Async-Compute)
Massive dies packed with transistors
Hot as fuck (housefire possibility)
Less power efficient
low clockspeeds
all the benefits maxwell had on 28nm planar were specific to that node and they lose them by translating the design to finFET
Relying on 512-bit GDDR5 on all cards below titan which is HBM2

>Polaris/vega
14nmFF from Samsung (9% smaller than 16nm TSCM)
Brand new Architecture specifically designed for finFET (optimized layout and performance)
runs cooler
more power efficient
same ACE layout from GCN 1.2
brand new geometry engine
Brand new primitive discard accelerator (this will improve tessellation performance by a fuckload)
HBM2 on top end vega and HBM1 on low end vega

HBM1 is good memory and will run much better on polaris than it did on the FuryX because it wont have the missmatched memory controller that cause leaking and clock instability in the modules

Fiji was designed for 20nm, HBM1 was designed for 20nm when TSCM fucked up their 20nm process AMD was forced back into 28nm so the missmatched size is why HBM is only 500mhz and runs like shit

with HBM1 on the upper range cards against Nvidia's GDDR5 AMD will have a size advantage and a power efficiency advantage

Why is Windows XP the comfiest OS ever?
322 posts and 57 images submitted.
>>
There's something about the way it looks, the simplicity and everything that makes it so soothing. Windows 7 tried throwing way too much eyecandy into our faces, and even making everything flat in 8 and 10 didn't help much.

What makes XP so comfy?

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

meh. academia is basically mostly rejections and you don't really get to rest on your laurels when you get success, so it's emotionally pretty draining. but i also swept loading docks growing up and this definitely beats that.

I think /g/ will like this

>two 4.2" screens, both IPS LCDs with 720p resolution
>MediaTek Helio P10 chipset with an octa-core processor
>4GB RAM / 64 GB storage w/microSD slot
>16MP main camera plus a 5MP selfie cam.
>fingerprint scanner
>USB type C

only catch is that it probably won't support US LTE bands and it's pretty expensive (~$600)
