Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I picked up a T400 on the cheap the other day and realized it's one of the "Cellular capable" models (it has a SIM card slot as well as an indicator on the status display), but it doesn't have an internal mobile broadband mini pci-e card installed.

Which model would be a good one to look into if I wanted to dick around with mobile broadband? Also, do these cards fall under Lenovo's whitelist issues?

I bought my first used Thinkpad earlier this year, an X201 with an M540. I replaced the old 160GB HDD with a 240GB SSD, and then added a 4GB RAM stick I had lying around to bring me up to 6GB total. Pretty impressed with the little guy, runs pretty cool, gets solid battery life, and is snappy as heck when doing normal tasks.

iirc the touchpad and palmrest are sold as a single piece (at least on the t420-t430) so parts shouldnt be too much.

yea, £15 for a used one, and it comes with BDC, fingerprint, and cable, just a little worn so gonna wrap it in vinyl, and it's not so bad as my current one has a crack in it so i was gonna replace it a few months down the line any way.
>>
>>53730720
Not much. In fact, unlike desktop CPUs, nowadays most intel laptop CPUs are almost exactly the same: 2 cores with HT. Only noticeable difference between i3/i5/i7 is just the base speed and boost speed, maybe the top i7 coming with a slightly better iGPU but that's all.
>>
>>53730865
This, maybe a little more cache, but with laptops the i7 isn't much beefier.

>>
>>53731214

most consumer laptops have the intake or outlet on the bottom. I actually like how the macbook had the fan grates in between the body and the hinge so you could use it in bed, but having them on the side/back like thinkpads do is aldo pretty good.

I think the main issue is that, by FCC regulations, Lenovo could be fined if they allow users to operate uncertified WWAN cards in their laptops (and I don't think its possible to identify WLAN cards from WWAN cards, so they have to restrict them all)."

basically they want to cover their ass legally

whether the fcc gives a shit is another thing

why i feel this is bullshit

1. they could exapand their whitelist greatly to contain wast majority of wifi cards taht are allowed by FCC

3. majority of manufacturers dont do whitelist

I already have a 128gb 840 laying around somewhere and I'll probably get a 500gb 850 evo anyway.

How much time can I get out of 3+3 cell? Is it worth buying a 6cell battery? They go for $78.

Is the X1 Carbon the best all-rounder/a good development machine?

If I was going to get one, should I buy it without a SSD and install my own, or do they make it hard to install a new drive? Need to upgrade from my Vostro and this machine can't even handle Wayland properly because of gay Nvidia drivers.

got a new T420i for duaghter. but the HD screw is stripped. how the heck can I get it open without breaking plastic?
>>
>>53737457
Rubber band on end of screwdriver for more grip, small dab of superglue and let it set, push down harder with different size screwdriver, etc.

Break the plastic and unscrew it with a set of pliers. The HDD door is cheap to replace.

Or just get a small set of ez-outs. The hardware store guy will know what you mean. It's a tool made for the job and will inevitably come in handy later.

Put a rubberband over the screw and then insert the screwdriver.
>>
>>53737734
That's why the legit Lenovo techs use all new screws when they service one. Or at least they used to.
>>
>>53737833

Yeah desu it was pretty stripped before I gave it a go. the HD was placed correctly at least with the ribbon. The last refurb one I got didn't have a ribbon and it was a bitch to get out. sure i broke it but it snaps in place and can't notice.

As the other anon said. I could always buy that piece if anything going wrong.

what OS is best for an x220, a Linucks distribution or Windows 7?
>>
>>53738197
That metal finish doesn't look THAT bad. Let's hope it's magnesium allow and not just plastic.
>>
>>53738443
Why not both? I mainly use Arch Linux. I actually have Win10 instead of 7 because I have an X220T, and Win7 tablet mode is shit compared to Win10. Win10 actually does lag a bit though with all effects on, so I turn them all off. Arch is very fast. Actually, on my X220T, Dolphin works a lot better in Linux than in Windows, for occasional Megaman 9, 10 and Animal Crossing.
>>
>>53738443

>best

Depends on your needs

>>53738434

Depends on your budget. x220 with a dock that connects to a decent screen is more than enough for more.

You really take the keyboard and trackpoint for granted after a while.
>>
>>53738590
make sure the tiny fragile plastic tabs aren't broken off the underside of the key. Also I think you have to thread the metal bar through the key? Anyway you;re probably better off replacing the keyboard entirely because there are 3 different manufacturers of Thinkpad keyboards and they all use different scissor designs, so if you just get a single key on eBay it might not fit.

I can do 720p YT with my one generation older T61, so you're clearly doing something wrong. It's probably the default compositor for Xubuntu. Replace it with Compton and configure correctly for glx (openGL) backend and you'll have better luck. I have no idea why Xubuntu still comes packaged with that godawful xfwm4 shit. It's universally reviled.
>>
>>53741964

The bigger issue seems to be why Linux still can't stop screen dimming during fullscreen video content. The OS has been around for decades at this point and the fact that it still lacks such basic features is an embarrassment.

Issues like that are the the "Year of the Linux Desktop" are a joke within the tech community.

Newfag on ThinkPad threads:

I need an laptop for my mother, which will never run games, yet I want some decent hardware.

The maximum money I want to spend on the laptop is 750 usd.

I made a pick, a very decent hardware that's exactly 750 usd.

ASUS F550JX-DM247D
i7-4720HQ 2.60GHz
15.6", Full HD
8GB ddr3
1TB ( 7200 rpm, decent hdd - I will add an ssd in 1 - 2 years )
nVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 4GB

Is this a good pick for a non gaming machine - is there an ThinkPad alternative?

I serious tho, 750 is cheap for that hardware - and is an investment which I'm going to ignore for 2 - 3 years.

My mother administrates an online shop - she is not exactly tech illiterate - she works with lots of media and data and demanding software.
