VR Thread!
I got to demo the HTC Vive this morning at a Microcenter in my town. Let me tell you /g/, it was fucking awesome.
Before today, the only VR tech that I had gotten to try was my Google Cardboard that I got for free. The Cardboard was fun for like a few days then I sort of forgot about it. It felt sort of gimmicky so I was kind of skeptical about VR being the next big thing. I have completely changed my mind though. Demoing the Vive was so mindblowing.
I got to do a few different demos. The first was a sort of landing room or something where you pick what games you want to play and stuff. You can play around with the motion controllers in here and create balloons and bop them around. Pretty neat.
Then I got to try out TiltBrush. I could literally play around in that shit for hours. Being able to draw in a 3D space and move around and look at it from different angles is crazy.
After that, I was transported to a sunken pirate ship thing where fish were swimming around, and a giant whale swims in front of you. I swear to you, it seems like you're fucking THERE. Everything looks so 3D and has depth. Fish would swim right in front of you and you can look around them. You seriously can't understand just how immersive it is unless you try it. I think that's the biggest thing with people thinking VR is gimmicky, like I did. With the Vive, it's totally immersive. All you see is the world you're in. The scale of everything is just mindblowing.
I think the controllers and motion tracking with the sensors is absolutely necessary for VR. With other headsets like the Oculus or Gear, you're pretty much just strapping a fancy screen on your head. Head tracking is cool, but it loses its fun quickly. Being able to use your hands, being able to bend down and look at shit or hold it close to your face to examine it, that's what did it for me. I felt like I was in the virtual world. (Continued)
Hey, shill, Oculus Touch engineering samples have already been sent out. You cucks are months away from losing your only advantage.
>>54659505
Oculus is the Apple of VR.
I've spent all day thinking about the implications of VR and all the shit its going to replace.
One of things I didn't like about the Vive is all the cables coming out of the back of the headset. Not being able to see it, I kept worrying that I was going to trip over it. It felt like it got wrapped around my leg sometimes. It's not terrible or anything, but I wish you didn't have to be tied to your PC. A standalone headset would be so much better. I know we're not close to that, though, because you need a high-end PC to run the Vive.
That's really my only problem with it though. Overall, it was fucking awesome and I wish everyone could have the opportunity to try it out. I promise you you'll be convinced. IMO, this shit is the FUTURE. I can't wait for VR to be consumer available. I've been watching YouTube videos of all the cool shit people are coming up with.
Once the Vive is at an affordable price (it was like $799 to preorder) , I am definitely getting one.
So what does /g/ think about VR? Feel free to ask me any questions about my experience.
Anyone else slowly getting tired of personal computer/consumer software/smartphone/internet technology here?
It doesn't feel as fun as back in the day, everything is now locked down and made for retards, especially when there is money involved. Privacy is non-existent if you don't work really hard to obtain it, socialshit is creeping into every piece of software, options are hidden away or removed altogether, choices are made for us. We live in an echo-chamber of opinions and news, only what pleases us is shown on the screen.
It feels like a constant, mentally tiring fight between us and our tech.
Why did it come to this? Where do we go to find a wild west again, to be creative and free?
The internet

I'd share useful stuff here but it would simply drown in an ocean of inane comments.

What did he mean by this?
4chanwebm () {
ffmpeg -threads 8 -sn -an -c:v libvpx-vp8 -pass 1 -b:v 2m -speed 4 -passlogfile /tmp/webmpass.log -i "$1" \

why doesn't this work? Just gives me some bs about maximum nested function level reached.

what programs do you eve use in linux?
i feel like everything is just a shitty version of another windows program
>>54658993
That's not Eve. It's Jeebus.
i use linux on my shitty laptop from 2005 to only browse internet
windows is too bloated for it. but on my desktop i obviously use windows because i'm not a retard who would voluntarily choose shit tier programs on linux when windows has pretty much everything i need, most importantly driver support (i work in 3d design)
>inb4 wine
I've noticed that most Linux programs seem to be content creation tools used to further the making of more content creation tools.
The latest phones are rediculously big. Why have a phone thats 5.7'+. Its a burdern to carry and they burn too much battery life.
2016 why arent you using the 4'* master races phone?

I am, and I've always found it just a bit too small for browsing. Even typing out more than a couple words is uncomfortable to then read back. Next phone will be ~5".
Best torrent program for raspberry pi 2 running rasbian? Also how does /g/ read and write ext4 in Winshit 7?
>>54658785
>>54658785
forget reading and writing ext4 on win7.
i just use rtorrent on my pi.
>>54658809
Nice, thanks.
I have 800gb of movies I want to move from my ntfs drive to my ext4 drive and my raspberry moved only half of the files in 13h so I'm looking for a different solution.
You could make a bootable usb and run it on ur wincuck pc
I'm genuinely curious as to why pacman gets so much shit. I've been using Arch with no DE for my home server (acts as my router, firewall, webserver and mailserver) and have had no issues with pacman. This is not b8, I really want to hear what people have against it
>>54658703
They don't.Most people hate apt.
/thread
Also, general Arch discussion welcome
>>54658740
Then why has it become a meme?
>mfw pacman messed up X again kek
Do RMS's four freedoms only apply to software? Shouldn't he extend them to all products of mankind if feels them essential and broaden his advocacy beyond software?
Shouldn't McDonalds give us their recipes so we can study our food, modify it to our tastes, and distribute copies to our friends?
Shouldn't fashion designers provide material lists, design patterns, and allow us to make our own clothes?
Shouldn't computer hardware companies provide blueprints and list the manufacturers of their parts so we can study our devices and get them to work the way we want?
If all of this happened, would the world even be better off?
bumping.
Not everybody is a chemical engineer. Not everybody can make clothing. Not everybody can make computer hardware and that includes CPU's for obvious reasons.
If you're good at something, never do it for free, and never give it away for free.

>you can eat Linux by itself as a delicious snack
>you need other shit for GNU to taste good
It's fitting, 10/10.
>all these fucking threads about people getting mad because their computers upgraded to Windows 10 without them telling it to do so
Maybe if those fags had listened to us last year, this wouldn't be happening.
>leaving auto-updates on and not reading what each update does before installing it
Retards like this are basically asking for it.
>>54658533
>implying windows 10 is bad
>>54658533
Seems like a lot of work just to keep using a shit OS that goes out of its way to fuck you over at every turn.
Is this normal that LG P760 L9 working on battery about 2 days? And no headphones working on my L9, is this broken or i need some especially retarded set?
Is TI OMAP better than Qualcom Snapdragon by energy drain?
>>54658415
not your tech support, faggot. install gentoo
>>54658431
>install gentoo
I don't want to brake it even more.
I have this phone. Battery life is great. Usually lasts me about two full days under normal usage. Sometimes it lasts three!!
My headphone Jack works. No "especially retarded set" necessary. Your s sounds broken.
Ur a nig
So what's the appeal of this considering most of what I do on my PC is gaming, shitposting on this site and listening to music?
>>54658376
Im not kidding but its for people who prefer OSX and enjoy the aesthetic appeal
>>54658376
Same as any PC.
Run Windows* on it if you must, Apple won't care. They make their money from selling the hardware.
*Windows is FREE (for a while).
>>54658376
There is no appeal and you should not buy it. Unless you have too much money in your hands and for some absurd reason want to play games on the 27" iMac. The most expensive GPU is quite beefy.
