This general is meant to replace /flt/ and the occasional BSD general threads, and everything UNIX-related.
GNU with Linux added bois come here

I'll just copy the last /flt/ because lazy

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try GNU with Linux added, you can:

1) Install a GNU with Linux added OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU with Linux added experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU with Linux added (very recommended, for your freedom)

If you are serious about switching to GNU with Linux added and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure shitheads),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU with Linux added as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

Two weeks from now we will find out what the "breakthrough" is that they delayed the Vive for.

Anyone hype? What do you think it could be? What are you hoping for?

VR general maybe.

Maybe super wide FOV or ultra low latency tracking since those would be really big breakthroughs.
The more I've gotten to use an HMD the less hyped I am for them to be honest. I like the isolation more than anything since blocking out all the distractions around you makes concentrating a hell of a lot easier. Its pretty comfy for movie watching too which is a big plus, but I can live without it.

Hey /g/, I been running a bitcoin miner on my gaming rig for the past 2 days, and still haven't seen a bitcent in my wallet. I'm very sure I've got my username and everything typed in correctly, but I'm having trouble figuring out if something is wrong or my expectations are wrong.

On the website of the pool I'm using, it says when rewarded unpaid balance reaches about .167 BTC, the miner enters payout queue, and are paid when the pool finds a block automatically. So this would mean that I would have to mine .167 BTC before I get paid anything right? If that's the case, then it makes sense that I haven't gotten paid yet, as I'm guessing that if it were this easy to pull roughly $50 USD out of thin air, a lot more people would be doing it.

Just curious if I'm just impatient or if something is actually wrong. Any idea how long it would take me to get to .167 BTC? My GPU is an Nvidia GeForce 550 TI with 1024 MB of vram, and I'm using a 6 core AMD somethingorother CPU that's fairly old too.

lol. With specs like that you're probably losing money with power costs. Just don't even bother with Bitcoin mining
>>
>>51988462
It's not about the money, I just think it's interesting that you can make money with CPU cycles.

Anyone here know technical details of LED grow lights?

I need some info specifically about simulating indirect light for ferns.

I'm thinking perhaps a lightweight solution compared to the the standard pot smoker's high powered lights.

Maybe like something as little as only 2 LEDs at a moderate distance. One red and one blue.

But I don't know much about light wavelengths and LED specs, or say the measurement of lumens for such and indirect light.

I've got a low light situation where I live and I want to do something to keep my ferns in good condition.

I know my way around simple wiring and soldering, how electricity works so I'm actually prepared to do some work.

I think as long as the spectrum of the light is far from greens, such as blue violet or reds the plants happily can grow in them, especially if your light source can warm up its surrounding environment (Basically if its a high wattage bulb). Just dont constantly keep them under the light i guess, plants also adhere to the usual day/night cycle. I think any old red purple or blue LED's will suffice.

>One red and one blue.
the red:blue ration should be ~70:30 not 50:50

>I know my way around simple wiring and soldering, how electricity works so I'm actually prepared to do some work.
no you aren't because the leds you want are the xcrees with 100-200lm/watt. the "normal" leds you get at electronic stores are useless for your purpose
>>
>>51987734
Pot growers (not necessarily smokers) also use certain types of fluorescent lights for 24/7 clone growing. I'll leave it to you to do the research.

Anyone here has experience with reballing?
My laptop dedicated gpu died, and needs a reballing. I took it to a repair shop and the guy told me that there is a ~15% chance that the reballing fails and the laptop is broken for good. Is that true?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>51987252
The GPU doesn't need re-balling until you pull it off the board. If you are going to replace the GPU with new part, then the balls are already on there. The only time you have to re-ball a part is if you are removing it and putting the same part back on there. Don't let the repair guy fool you.
>>
>>51987252
There's a chance it could fail, yes.
I wouldn't assign a number to it.

Here's the facts:

1) To remove the GPU, they need to heat the ENTIRE BOARD. The larger it is, the greater the chance for failure, as heating and cooling causes flexing

2) They will be heating the GPU past its tolerances to melt the solder. It had this done once when it was placed, now you're heating it AGAIN to remove it, and one last time to re-solder it

3) The machine could fuck up and smear a solder ball when placing the GPU, this will maybe ruin it when the power it on to test.

4) Even if the re-balling is successful, there's no promise it wont suffer the same problems again, as they have to use the same shitty lead-free solder that cracks easier than leaded solder.

Good luck. Reballing is a costly thing to do, are you sure you can't just get a replacement board?
>>
This is about "cold" solders. Right? That they tend to "crack"?

The only case I've witnessed was heating up RAM cards. Before it could spawn with errors, but after using similar tool as in OP's pic (except the heater was with grip) it was working w/o errors.

Not sure about GPU.
