ITT: Fonts.

In particularly monospace fonts, and the rare and based monospace unicode fonts. Or the so-called "programmer" fonts. Though, I don't really program. I just like to quickly and easily organize and compare stuff to make everything easier.

I know a lot of people like to avoid talking about this or think that after all this time we would already have flawless fonts needed: but we don't. At least not for me. And I think there may be others.

Instead of asking "what's the best font" I'll just say what I'm going to use; so it can be accepted, or other suggestions can be made. I'm going to use [GNU] Unifont 12 for most things from now on.

The main issue is that sometimes I have to work with things in other languages. I would like them to at least be monospaced. If the font can't render the character: it makes a square block that's not monospace. If it wasn't for that then I wouldn't have to do this. But that's the reality.

tl;dr: I'm looking for a monospace unicode font and the best 1 I've font so far is [GNU] Unifont.

Before I begin with additional posts: I'd like to say that this probably won't make any sense to a lot of people. They're personal notes I'm sharing and don't follow any convention. So they probably only make sense to me. But I still feel the need to post everything; In case anyone has questions, or wants to know more about it.

tl;dr: What I'm posting probably only makes sense to me; But I decided to post it anyway.
>>
Here's some fonts tested and some extremely short tl;dr notes about them.

Font              |Note
Arial |not mono or uni
Arial Unicode MS |not uni
Times New Roman |not mono or uni
courier New |not uni
Fixedsys |not uni
Fixedsys Excelsior|uni brk in NP
DejaVuSans Mono |uni brk in NP
[GNU] Unifont |bitmapped

Also I looked up the fonts to see what gets the most results. I'm assuming what gets more results is more popularity accepted. So, it may be better to work with in that sense, too.

Font               |Look-up Results
"fixdsys excelsior"|3,850
"gnu unifont" |40,100
"dejavu sans mono" |75,300
"dejavu sans" |187,000

By the way: I'm pretty sure everyone knows what search engine I used to look this up. So I don't feel the need to mention it. They don't need anymore advertising.
>>
Also I know I have a lot to say here so the whole thing's "tl;dr". But there's "tl;dr" notes at the end of all of them. So there's no excuse not to read it. I've thought about this for a long time. I always put this off. I always thought the answer would just come. But it doesn't. So. I'm going to solve this issue once and for all. I'm going to bring closure.

tl;dr: tl;dr I have a lot to say but put tl;dr's everywhere; So there's no excuse not to read it.

This is just about the perfect font for anything that isn't word processing

Why are you using anything else?

I find it kind of funny when people who claim to be really privacy conscious put something over their webcam. like a video of you naked, changing, masturbating, etc... is anything compared to the fact that the hypothetical intruder can monitor all the business you conduct on your computer, which is basically all the business you conduct.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ggWK6h

I'm going to use it to work with Premier Pro, Lightroom and Photoshop and I'm beginning to learn web development.

I'll also be playing games on it, my budget would ideally be keeping the setup under £800. I won't be buying Windows and instead using Dax installer. I also have another 144hz monitor that I wish to buy but haven't chosen yet.

Be brutally honest, is this the worst build you've ever seen?

# New & Revised /dpt/ Code of Conduct #
We want to ensure that the /dpt/ community, while large and diverse, remains
welcoming and respectful to all participants. To that end, we have a few
ground rules that we ask people to adhere to.

- *Be friendly and patient.*

- *Be welcoming.* We strive to be a community that welcomes and supports
people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited
to members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, colour,
immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex,
sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family
status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability.

- *Be respectful.* Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement
is no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We might all experience
some frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn
into a personal attack. It’s important to remember that a community where
people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. Members of
the /dpt/ community should be respectful when dealing with other members as
well as with people outside the /dpt/ community.

- *When we disagree, try to understand why.* Disagreements, both social and
technical, happen all the time and /dpt/ is no exception. It is important
that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively. Remember
that we’re different. The strength of /dpt/ comes from its varied community,
people from a wide range of backgrounds. Different people have different
perspectives on issues. Being unable to understand why someone holds a
viewpoint doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. Don’t forget that it is human to
err and blaming each other doesn’t get us anywhere. Instead, focus on
helping to resolve issues and learning from mistakes.

Got a weird bug, which I'm pretty sure is a logic error on my part. Anyone wanna help?

Language is Swift.

When I run this code in a Cocoa interface, it saves the value as a string and makes it the placeholder text instead of writing the value. The weird part is when I open the window back up, that value is the placeholder text, and when I submit it, it takes the value, just like I want it to do the first time around.

Effectively it causes a user interface bug where the user would have to save the api key, close the window, open it again, and click save again. Kinda weird.

import Foundation
import Cocoa

class SavePreferences: NSViewController {
@IBOutlet weak var apiKeySavedText: NSTextField!
let defaults = NSUserDefaults.standardUserDefaults()
var apiKey = ""
var apiKeyTitle = NSUserDefaults.standardUserDefaults().objectForKey("userApiKey")

//MARK textfield for api key
@IBOutlet weak var textFieldApiKey: NSTextField!

//MARK save API Key as default preference
@IBAction func btnSaveApiKey(sender: AnyObject) {
self.defaults.setObject(self.textFieldApiKey.stringValue, forKey: "userApiKey")
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_global_queue(DISPATCH_QUEUE_PRIORITY_DEFAULT, 0)) { () -> Void in
self.defaults.synchronize()
print("apikey saved as", self.apiKeyTitle)
}
apiKeySavedText.hidden = false
}

override func viewDidLoad() {
super.viewDidLoad()
apiKeySavedText.hidden = true
if(self.defaults.valueForKey("userApiKey") != nil) {
textFieldApiKey.placeholderString = self.defaults.valueForKey("userApiKey") as? String
}
}

}

I've finally decided to upgrade my computer. I'm going to scrap my current Pentium 2 completely and I've decided to go with an I7.

I want performance without spending a fortune. It doesn't need to be the most recent architecture and o wanted a good MOR CPU in that category so I've decided on a 4790k.

I can't for the life of me figure what I should look for in a motherboard.

I've seen some of those Asus vengeance LGA 1150 boards but don't have many PCIe slots. Not sure if I need them anyway?

What would you suggest that isn't basic cheap o but isn't a fortune. If no can get a better board cheaper second hand, I will.

Thinking of taking CS in college? DON'T.

If I caught a junior or even a seasoned programmer WRITING ALGORITHMS and NOT USING FUCKING LIBRARIES WRITTEN BY TEAMS WHO DO IT FOR A LIVING I WOULD FUCKING FIRE HIS ASS!

There are phds and scientists that work in teams in R&D depts. full time to develop novel algorithms for various and sundry operations. Everything from sorting to novel data structures and so forth. If you are doing ANYTHING of the sort from scratch you should be FIRED on the spot for wasting company time and introducing security and performance risks in code.

CS is a bullshit uni course. By the time your in ANY position to be writing ALGORITHMS or actually doing COMPUTER SCIENCE you'll have LONG forgotten anything you 'learned' in school.

Uni is doing kids a huge disservice. They should be teaching you how to actually write good code for 4 years so you'll be useful to someone. If you want to write *algorithms* or do *science* become a fucking scientist in an RnD dept. Oh yeah, you wouldn't be in one for YEARS anyway!!!!

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.
