What specs do you run? What plugins or any sort of fancy routing tricks do you use?

I don't do anything fancier than putting in some OpenNIC DNS servers and forwarding some ports. I just wanted something that was getting security updates between my network and the internet. My old Asus router hadn't had a firmware update since like 2010.
it's not on exciting hardware either. Dual-core Pentium on an ITX board with an Intel NIC in the slot.
i run mine virtualized which isnt really a big deal at the moment. currently have 10 nics in it. 5 physical and 5 virtual for 9 different subnets + the wan
I am looking to but a new computer to serve my website. Currently, my computer has an ADM Sempron, so it isn't able to handle the 30k plus page views I am getting every day.
After a little digging around on ebay and newegg, I found these ( I need windows xp or at least windows 7 for my software):

I would appreciate if anyone might suggest a good server for me. I just need something that is capable of handling a TON of instructions at a time. Memory isn't an issue as my server only takes up less than 20k.
> using Windows XP for a server
> hosting your own site
It'd probably be better to use a hosting service instead.
>>54300907
I programmed the server in a really old language called qbasic for fun, but now it's growing so I am not gonna quit.
Also, I would rather learn about hosting so I may expand to offer my own VPN services in the future.
I am in the process of porting my software to linux, bit it probably wouldn't help if I am still using my old computer.

it's stressful. Most places you're always fighting fires or trying to get version X+1 out before the marketing department's deadline, and there's no time or budget to do things properly. You're salaried so they can page you at 2am when production goes down without having to pay you overtime. You're expected to train yourself on your own time. Your users are clueless at best and actively hostile and malicious at worst.

Hi /g/
I realize this might sound retarded but hey I figure I have to try. This is gonna be a bit long.
I know theres a lot of shitposting and purposefully disrupting threads but hopefully someone knowledgable and willing to give some advice.
I know just enough about computers to know I don't really know shit about computers and I'm looking for somewhere to start.
Since I don't know much the particular differences between different carreer options and how one might prepare for them or transition from one to another.
Im hoping to try a few things and see if anything clicks. I honestly don't know if I would like to learn to program, to be a sys admin, security, web developer, software engineer etc. Basically how/where do I acquire the basic knowledge I need so that I can get a sense of direction in the tech world?
Background Info: Typical family tech support, can google around till something works if not I do my best to back up important files and reinstall widnows, I have a basic understanding of price/performance when it comes to basic hardware and have built a couple computers for friends and family. Recently cut way back on gaming and figure the money/time I spent on that could be put to better use. (Grandpa got cancer, put a lot of shit in perspective for me about not following up on personal hobbies and that.)
Not going into this thinking I'll be the next Woz, Gates, or Zuckerberg. If I find something I'm interested in that'll be its own reward and if I can make some money off it even better.
Where would you start? I'll be around for atleast a couple hours so hopefully someone will have the time to waste on helping me out.
If nobody is able (or just not willing) to spoonfeed me I'll understand. Even a nudge in the right direction as far as communities or resources where this sort of thing might be better explored would probably be incredibly useful.

If you want real answers.
My rec is go for certs, but ask on there where verifiable In-Field professionals can be found.

>I know just enough about computers to know I don't really know shit about computers and I'm looking for somewhere to start.
most people (outside 4chan, for sure) would tell you the next step is formal education in comptuer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or whatever strikes your fancy.
Fuck them. Woz, Gates, and Zuckerberg learned their shit ad-hoc and so can you.
A lot of advice will gravitate your way regarding classes, online resources, tracks and so on. It's good advice but missing the point.
You need to find something you FUCKING LOVE to do. something you will do even if it pays shit, or pays nothing at all.
If you do not have a clear goal in mind, the path to get there is 100% ambiguous. I personally think the difference between career software engineering cogs and technological entrpeneurs has more to do with motivation than genius, and I believe most of /g/ would agree (to a point)
So anon, what exactly about computers *excites* you?
>>54300194
I'll start browsing and searching through the subreddit.
I guess with certs I'll have to look into cost and avilability (I somehow doubt they're doable online because why wouldn't you google?) since I don't live close to any big cities and that would involve plane tickets.
Appreciate the heads up.

Thinking of going all in with GNU:
Emacs for email. Libreoffice for docs, files, and photos. Slackware with hurd, cowsay, wget, everything.
Am I fucking insane??
Yep. Don't do it. Nothing good comes from it except more inconvenience.
>>54300023
>Slackware with turd
Yeah, you are an idiot.
>>54300047
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as inconvenience, is in fact, GNU/inconvenience, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus inconvenience.

Good job, America.
>The US Supreme Court has approved a rule change that could allow law enforcement to remotely search computers [in the US and] around the world.
>Previously, magistrate judges could order searches only within the jurisdiction of their court, often limited to a few counties.
>The US Department of Justice (DoJ) said the change was necessary to modernise the law for the digital age.

>Internet explorer support still has to be treated completely separately from every other browser in web development
holy fucking shit what is wrong with microsoft?
Even Microsoft admits it is shit. That's why Edge is a thing.
>>54299701
It's called enterprise market. IE 11 will be supported for the next 10 (already 9) years. Tho it's pretty shitty without extensions, but dat fucking smooth scrolling.
>>54299701
IE is dead dipshit and they're offering every Windows 7 user and Windows 8 user an upgrade to the OS which has Edge as the new default browser that is a complete fork of IE with all of the legacy cruft completely stripped away.
There's not a whole lot more MS can do to get dumbasses off of IE.
Hey guys, I was working on a template for a website and I wondered if I should use a simple HTML tag (like <dd>) or use a named div.
I'm torn on this because the former means less load for the server and the latter means being compliant with current standards.
