There were two trackball threads last night. Does anyone still use these? I got two out of the closet and I am now using them instead of my regular mouse again.

I use then but I don't think the technology moves fast enough to merit another thread

It's not about that really. Mouse tech isn't really changing either.

>no stupid questions thread

Here I go. I'm getting a momentary drop in my network every five seconds. It shows on both upload and download traffic. No disconnection announcements or warnings. Happens to all traffic: torrents, youtube, ddl. Pic related.

D-Link DIR-850L wi-fi router (firmware is updated)
EnGenius AC1200 USB wireless adaptor

I use the EnGenius utility to connect and I'm on a 5GHz channel.

When I Google this I just get posts with people complaining about disconnections. I haven't figured out how to phrase my search to get more relevent results.

What would /g/ do?

Direct connect? Wifi only? Distance issue? Antenna strength issue? Intereference? Shit cord? nat issue?
>>
probably them illegal aliums spying on you
>>
>>Direct connect? Wifi only?

Haven't tried a direct connection. PC and phone plug (DSL) are in diff rooms. I own a 25' cable but it's on loan to a friend. I'll have to move and set up the tower to check this. Not impossible but I'd rather check easier shit first.

>>Distance issue?

I don't believe so. It's maybe 15 feet from router to pc, with one drywall wall in between. Signal strength is strong both in the EnGenius utility and my tablet's Wifi Analyzer app, for both g and ac channels that the router is using. Although there is a weird double-signal on my g broadcast. Pic related, it's the blue and green on channel 9. Sometimes they merge into one, sometimes they look like this.

The app does show the ac signal dropping out completely and then returning. The g broadcast is constant with only slight variance in strength.

>>Antenna strength issue?

Signal strength is set to medium for g, strong for ac.

>>Intereference?

No idea. App doesn't sow any other channels in use near mine on ac.

>>Shit cord?

Possibly. I'm using a short usb cord on the adaptor so I could pitch the adaptor up and turn it to better face the router.

>>nat issue?

I don't know.

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

sennheiser MX 170. the cheapest ones they have.
sure the sound quality isn't great but for me in-ears are just too fragile to buy expensive ones. They wear down very quick if you carry them around a lot and I wouldn't want to spend 100 bucks 1-2 times a year.

Looks like my computer has one. Most likely person is a network administrator who's been stalking me. Should I contact the police immediately or try to remove my personal data off the machine first? Just bought a GTX 970 for $300.

Did I fuck up, because I'm reading the next version of Nvidia GPU (Pascal) is half the nm size 28 vs 14.

I don't want to put you under any pressure this is just to ask I don't expect you to know the future-- would waiting the year give me huge boosts in performance at a similar price point?

You fucked up. 970 loses consistently against AMD's 390 and they're cheaper too. inb4 "muh power efficiency" and "muh drivers".

I did look, my PSU is a 750 watt gold modular Seasonic. I used a free power calculator. Meaning I can SLI the 970 in the future and I couldn't Crossfire the 390 it is my deciding factor.

Upgrading from SLI 460s as one of the fans broke.

What are /g/'s views on piracy? When do you think it's acceptable and when do you think it's wrong? Don't give a fuck? Use free software instead?
I think piracy is fine if the software isn't available to purchase anywhere/in your country.

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

I need all my stuff in one area. I just scroll through and decide what I want to watch.

Switching discs to watch something? and having to find it. I got bored of that when DVDr's were big enough to hold aXXo movies.

The movies I get now are 1-2 GB in size and watchable so my 3 TB drives can store plenty. If I did want a backup I would just back it up and update every now and then to assure it's current.

discs just seem too much of a hassle for anything that spans across 5 or more. For example Bluray would be good for my software archive that is less than one disc or music also but when I got 1,700 movies I'm not trying to leave my computer and flip through books and shit to see what I'd like to see. Whatever I'm in the mood for being two clicks and a scroll away is just too convenient.

>>windows proven to be a real security threat
Yeah because you are fuckin dumb.
Do you even realize companys use microsofts service to store their emails?
Do you realize that microsoft employees can read those emails?
Do you realize that worrying about your local machines security if you have stored anything in the cloud anyway is fuckin stupid?
>>
>>52326395
If you use just a browser, word processor and multimedia things, ARM is perfectly adequate.
