I'm starting a new job (essentially a trucker) and I'm going to be away from home a lot, so I want to get a gaming laptop.

Do you think there is a noticably large difference between the 970m and the 980m? I don't really plan on playing every new game, but I will probably play games like New Vegas or Skyrim with a lot of graphics mods.

I was thinking of getting this:
https://www.amazon.com/G751JY-17-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-model/dp/B015QZPRW4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466046718&sr=8-2&keywords=asus+980m

980m, $1430

or this

https://www.amazon.com/G751JT-17-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-model/dp/B00NVV2B98/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1466046718&sr=8-3&keywords=asus+980m

970m, 1185$
other specs are basically the same.

Is the 250$ difference worth it?

Both of these have a second hard drive bay, so I may install an SSD myself.

Any other suggestions for similar power/price range? I'm willing to pay a bit more for a reliably sturdy brand with good build quality like asus. I hear MSI is also good.

You'll get slightly better graphics, but other than that i guess not much else. I have and Old ASUS ROG 2010 and that thing lasted for about 3 years, then shit on me and decided it was going to not start up anymore. It eventually did but I'd be really careful with buying these "gaming" laptops. You never know when it's going to shit on you.
>>
>>55101278

Actually, I have an ROG already, which is why I linked to others in the OP becuase I liked it a lot. It's getting old enough now that I want to replace it. Plus it's a little broken. It lasted a lot fucking longer than previous gaming laptops I've had, though.

I love GNU/Linux, but have only used *buntu distros. Right now I'm on Xubuntu, and it works well enough, but there are some jank things that bother me. I've been thinking about installing arch, because it seems like if I can configure everything there might be less bugs. Am I falling for the meme, /g/?

Arch is nice enough, good doc too.
Install antergos if you don't want to bother with the installation. It does the exact same thing but you save 30 mins and you don't seem like a l33t hacker
>>
Arch has, hands down, the best package manager. It also uses systemd, so if you're okay with that go right ahead, though you probably already deal with that in xubuntu. Arch is more for tinkering, finding what you like and can be a pain to manage sometimes

Assuming 30% yields on a 200mm wafer, and assuming Zen's die size will be around 200mm squared looking at the recent die shot leak, AMD will need to sell the recently revealed 8-core Zen chips for $120 a piece in order to make 50% profit margins.

>each 200mm silicon wafer is $200
>processing each is an additional $1500-$1800
>a 10mm x 20mm Zen CPU would be able to fit onto this wafer 116 times
>116 x 30% yields = 35 working CPUs
>$2000 per wafer divided among 35 CPUs = $57 spent making each Zen CPU

A price point of $199 for Zen is totally doable in the long term, although they'll probably milk it for $250-$300 at first. Maybe even more.

Unless anyone has more info on Zen's costs and AMD's typical profit per CPU, and its yields, this seems like a pretty solid result.
