I would say that knowing some some higher levels of calculus, algebra and other things they have tried to teach me in university is the first step where you stop being code monkey and starts your long painful journey into software engineering.
If nothing else it helps you to develop/train the abstract engine in your head and filter out the lazy/bad students.

So far I've looked at esxi and some weird shit called unRAID by limetech.
Also you think AMD gpus will always be easier to pass through? I want the gtx1080 for machine learning shit on linux and ideally it'd be nice if there were a hypervisor that I could have the gpu pass through for both linux and windows and just run one at a time.

good luck with this, you gonna need it. I am not saying it doesn't exists, but in most project it still has the label "experimental", it has poor performance and it works with limited software, sometimes you even need combinations of hardware as well.
Much more reliable way is to dual boot. It is 10 minutes of setup, 100% software compatibility no matter what updates, drivers, kernels will screw up in future and no bottlenecks in your virtual machines.

AMD and anything linux related is a bad idea. Not that nvidia is much better, but still they at least bother to release SOMETHING which maintainers pack into packages.

I am not sure which kind of problems you want to solve, but anything basic can be done with normal CPU + a LOT of RAM. But hey, it will play your games fine.
tldr:
GPUs in VMs are EXPERIMENTAL. Atm not worth any effort at all. Save yourself time and do dual boot if you must.

For my first proper build, should I use an AMD CPU, or an Intel CPU? Which does /g/ recommend? I won't be doing anything too CPU intensive, but Gentoo will be used on the machine, so the compile times will have to be taken into account...

Entirely depens. If you are a poorfag and only want to invest very little monry, there are probably some AMD CPUs which are worth it. If you have a little more money to spend an Intel CPU will most probably be better,,,

Windows 8 or later might work reasonably well depending on your GPU because of the way later versions of windows offloads more tasks to it. Just be sure to use the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit version. Also, a RAM upgrade might help but isn't crucial.

How important is knowing software development methodologies (such as agile, spiral, waterfall, etc.) in professional software development? Is it something you need to know in order to get a programming job?

Not really. Every company has their own version of the methodology they claim to use anyway. And absolutely none of them work for their intended purpose.
My sound card transmits squealing, like the shit you hear from your GPU, into my headphones.
I've narrowed it down to it needing a molex connector from my PSU. I swapped the card to one that doesn't have a power connector, and it's noise free.
So naturally I thought it's the PSU, but I swapped that now, and the card still gives that fucking noise. At this point what the shit can I do? I literally don't know why it's happening, other than bad PSU cables (they're individually braided), or two noisy PSUs which I consider unlikely.
For the moment I'm running my headphones on my onboard Intel HD audio (2011 socket), which has no problems, but I feel like I'm missing out on quality. I keep my stereo speakers plugged into the dedicated card because they're fine / clear it out somehow.
