For those in IT or software development, how do you keep your skills up to date? What are some resources you use? Any tips?
I've been working in IT for about 2 years after college and I've been doing fine, but I feel like I'm scraping by sometimes because I don't really hone my skills outside of work.
How can I get better at doing so?

I give your mom some input / output
Bump.
Basically I'm good at picking up skills at work and can do so quickly. But I don't really know what to do outside of work. What to look into, what to practice, how to get better, etc.
I don't really have a mentor at work and my work doesn't really offer training either.

It's fucking pathetic that people feel the need to work all fucking day, then go home to study shit so that they can stay "ahead" of some bullshit game that they'll never win anyway.
Go to the goddamn gym. Develop relationships. Go for walks. If you keep this up, you're going to fuck up your body with all this sedentary...

Ok /g/ spill it: Where can I buy one and which one is the best?
I want to get it for Christmas but don't want to get fleeced by some ching chong jew fuck in Taiwan who charges me $400 and sends me a skateboard with two blenders ductaped to either side fitted with LEGO tires.

Microsoft Edge’s JavaScript engine to go open-source
>Today at JSConf US Last Call in Florida, we announced that we will open-source the core components of Chakra as ChakraCore, which will include all the key components of the JavaScript engine powering Microsoft Edge. The ChakraCore sources will be made available on GitHub under the MIT license next month.
>Chakra offers best-in-class JavaScript execution with the broadest set of ES2015 feature coverage and dependable performance, reliability, and scalability....

Why not just go full open source? Freetards might actually improve it.

Chakra outperforms V8 on several benchmarks.
I know it's a pipe dream, but maybe someday we can have a nodejs alternative that isn't completely infested with SJWs. Maybe Chakra is the future.
Doubtful.
Which is der ultimative processor?
Which one is the best?

5820K master race.
>>51799136
More dependant on the gpu but pretty much. They're all good. Just a dick waving contest for the most part. Sure hyperthreading and more cores but not a noticeable improvement for gaming.
>>51799136
Processors are progressing MUCH, MUCH more slowly than GPUs right now. Chances are any of those processors you named would be satisfactory for at least 5 years to come-- if not 10. 5960X is playing it the absolute safest with 8 physical cores for future applications. However, the new Broadwell-E chip line comes out in 4 months and will have a 10 core/20 thread Xtreme chip at the $1000 price tag. I would wait for that.
If you are just gaming, a 6700k.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:
1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)
If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and...

Like graphics design?
Or 3D computer graphics?
Or photo manipulation?
Or audio production?
Or engineering/architecture?
Or video editing?
Or visual effect creation?
Or like anything other than coding?
How do I go about dual booting with windows 7 and debian? Downloading debian with kde. Doing my first install of anything linux tonight and am gonna goof around with it for a bit.
Also, should I've got a 290, should I use the video outputs on my board instead of my graphics cards since debian wont have my drivers installed right away?
I'm currently in my first CS class. We are learning teh "idea" of coding through a program called Alice and it makes me want to shit my brains out.
/g/ what do you think of this shit platter? It fucking crashes on file sizes larger than like 30 megabytes and its just straight ass. Also the girl in their icon looks like what would shit out if shrek and brittany spears had sex and shrek forgot to pull out.
(we use version 2.2 which is outdated)
That shit is awful. I'd rather use scratch

why is it called computer science even though there's no science involved?
>>51798248
There's hypothesis, experimentation, and theory. Math is a science, and chemistry is a science. Computer science is just as scientific as both of those, combined.

so code monkeys can feel like the achieved something by paying academia to learn to use an IDE for four+ years
Computer Science was an actual science back when computers weren't abstract and you needed a large body of knowledge to do simple tasks
