Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

How do I go about dual booting with windows 7 and debian? Downloading debian with kde. Doing my first install of anything linux tonight and am gonna goof around with it for a bit.

Also, should I've got a 290, should I use the video outputs on my board instead of my graphics cards since debian wont have my drivers installed right away?

Kerbal Space Program does not run in 64 bit in windows because it's too unstable.
This leaves you with a mere 3.5Gb ram to use which is not enough if you add a few mods.
On linux it has 64 bit support and works better than windows.

They literally removed the ext3 driver from the Kernel (but the ext4 can still handle it).

How the hell do I fix this? I didn't remove the partions, however, there were two that I saw, one was the one that I made which was around 30 gigs and the other was like 1 gig. I noticed that when I cleared them they like, merged together so to speak.

You can use Weston, the reference compositor. As far as I know it's the only compositor that works as a standalone program. I've been out of the loop for a while, though, where Wayland is concerned. Weston is missing way too many features to ever be useful for anything but experimentation, but for experimentation it might be good enough.

This is me.

After getting it installed, I forgot the fucking user name, then fucked up partitions, then had to reinstall Debian after wondering what the fuck GRUB was and why it was broken. Then I had to look around for a hour and get frustrated because whenever I tried to use sudo or something it told me I was getting reported or recorded or some shit. Then I learned all I have to do is type in su then the root password in the terminal.

At least I got my issue fixed.

I really like GNU stuff generally but I've actually not spent much time in emacs and I've fallen in love with vim and its bindings..

I think the only time I used emacs was on a macbook at school when I realized it was installed on all mac os computers. All I did was read a built-in story that Stallman wrote about something free software-related. I don't even remember if it was related to emacs.

reinstalling to fix something is pretty dumb but using lubuntu is also pretty dumb

if you don't mind blowing that shit away you should switch to arch while you're at it

"lubuntu loading screen" doesn't really mean anything, can you provide a picture? what you're referring to is probably referring to something specific to a desktop environment

can you get into a TTY? (ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-f2, etc.)

if yes then you can troubleshoot from there. uninstall whatever you think fucked it up, maybe try a different DE or something

getting rid of your display manager and setting up xinitrc might be a good option

Ok so let's talk about Linux Mint for a second. Anyone here using LMDE? It seems like the perfect jumping-in point for someone who wants to go into Debian over Ubuntu. I assume it uses the same repos as Testing.

My favourite distro is fedora but I have an amdgpu card (r9 285) and xf86-video-amdgpu isn't on fedora yet and I can't find out how to install it for the life of me.

What should I use instead? Or does anyone here know how to install the amdgpu driver on fedora? It looks like I'll have to wait for fedora 24 right now.

So I'm thinking of either installing funtoo (I installed it before, don't worry) or arch. Which should I choose and why?

I've had bad experiences with arch so I'm inclined to go towards funtoo, but the lack of binary repos and the fact that I'll have to compile everything drives me away from it.

Did an update just wreck my bootloader?

I'm using Linux Mint and installed some updates via the tool in the tray as I'd usually do.

I didn't reboot the computer until right now and I can't boot into Linux anymore.

I do have a Windows installation on dual boot and when I start he auto boots into that although I did the settings in bios that he would alwas boot the linux partition. Thing is - that just isn't there anymore. Only bootable partition I can choose from is the UEFI Hard DIsk: Windows Boot Manager.

What is the point of using Linux for privacy, when you guys are making all of your posts on 4chan which logs everything you do and saves on the NSA database, along with hottolink's japan database to sell your social data?

Can any of you handsome studs explain this part of a bash script to me? Basically an anon wrote it for me as I asked about how I could make a script sleep until a specific application is open, rather than me sleeping for X arbitrary seconds.

while true; do
(pgrep 'application' > /dev/null && sleep 0.1) || break
done

As far as I can tell it will just redirect the output of pgrep into /dev/null and then sleep for 0.1. I don't get why there is the OR break either. How does this sleep until the program is open exactly? What if pgrep fails because the application is not open yet?

pgreps exit status is 0 as long as the application is running, so the break will never be evaluated until pgrep fails to find the application. If you start the script before the application is running it will stop directly.

Though I don't know if you really need to poll 10 times per second, seems excessive.
>>
>>51808399
&&
: Run command on the right side only if left side returns non-zero
||: Run command on the right side only if left side returns 0
Programs with linux return an exit code when they terminate. In this case, if pgrep finds the application running, it returns 0, and sleep is executed. Sleep should always return 0 with that command, so the break is not executed. Then the loop restarts from beginning. If pgrep does not find the application, it returns non-zero, and the sleep is not executed. However, now the break executes, and the loop is terminated.
>>
>>51808399
Im not an expert.
If I am wrong please correct me

The key to this script is the "true" word.
If you do "man true" you'll see that true does absolutely nothing, it's purpose is to always return zero.

bash's while loop goes like
while [ condition ]
do
command1
command2
command3
done

And since in your loop the condition is always true then it will always run the command.

Now the command
(pgrep 'application' > /dev/null && sleep 0.1) || break

The double pipe || means that "if the first command returns 0 (succeeds), the second one will never be executed"
So the first part checks if "application" runs (and returned by pgrep) and then waits for 0.1 second.
If the first command fails (ie pgrep doesn't return application) the "break" is executed and the loop ends.
>>
>>51808399
>>51808853
Also this script can be shortened to
while [ $(pgrep application) ]; do sleep 1; done
>>
>>51808756
>>51808813
>>51808853

I think I'm wrong on this, but it sounds like what you're saying is that the script will sleep as long as the application is open? That is not what I wanted, what I wanted was the script to sleep UNTIL the application IS open.

From what I'm understanding here, sleep will execute if pgrep succeeds (ie the application is running) and the loop will break once pgrep fails the loop will break.

then would it not be instead:

(pgrep 'application' > /dev/null || sleep 0.1) && break

?

You want the loop to break when the application is run?

As ridiculous as it may sound what you want to do is replace WHILE in your loop with UNTIL.

until [ $(pgrep application) ]; do sleep 1; done

Going to do a LFS install, should I use Debian or Trsiquel as the base?
>>
>>51809234
According to distrowacth.com, Netrunner is basically Kubuntu + some media packages like Flash that (apparently) don't come pre-installed in Kubuntu. If you're determined to switch to Linux, then just install Kubuntu and figure out how to install and configure those packages yourself, because that's a vital skill for any Linux user. In general, the core of another distro plus a particular desktop environment is pretty much the maximum level of specificity that it's reasonable for a distro to have. Beyond that, a beginner generally can and should do it themselves. Using high-level distros (a distro based on a distro based on a distro based on a distro, etc) comes with certain disadvantages (smaller distros with fewer users and fewer devs might be slow to get updates, might introduce bugs, etc)

To put it another way, let the distro select and configure operating components, and select and configure applications yourself. Where you draw the line between an operating system component and an application depends on how advanced a user you are (e.g. a file browser might be either one, or even a window manager). As you get more advanced your personal preferences will start to push deeper into the operating system (caring about what package manager you use, rather than just what your desktop looks like, for example), so your first distro shouldn't be your last and therefore isn't exactly a life decision. Just pick one that you like and understand that you'll be changing it later as you learn more about Linux.

if Netrunner looks good to you, I suggest that you try Kubuntu. Personally I think KDE is many times more complicated and resource hungry than alternatives that do all the same shit, like XFCE. Maybe it's better to choose a DE based on how you like its default configuration until you're more advanced, but on the other hand maybe adapting a technically superior DE to your preferences is a good place for a beginner to start learning.

>>
>>51809673
>Any important config files?
That depends. Have you spend time and effort altering any?

If all of your configuration files are generated by GUI front ends and you can just click through a few menus to get things back the way they were, then it's probably nearly as easy to do that as it would be to restore them from a backup.

If you've spent time reading manuals and experimenting and tweaking and and have a system full of complicated configuration files that all depend on each other for their overall effect, then you probably know which files are important.

Global configuration files are kept in /etc. Some applications keep important data in /var. Per-user configurations are kept in hidden files and folders within each user's home directory. If you're already backing up your home directory, just include hidden stuff in the backups and your user-specific settings and application data will be preserved.

>If all of your configuration files are generated by GUI front ends
That's the issue I think, I'd say half is done via the DE's GUI settings, the other was done thanks to wiki help pages. That's why it confuses me as to what I should backup.
I'll just backup my whole home folder for starters, it should be fine.

>Can I somehow export a whole list of package names to re-install quickly?
How you would do this depends on what package manager you use, but I would think that it would be possible with all of them. In portage, a list of explicitly installed packages is kept at /var/lib/portage/world. The packages on the system are these packages plus their dependencies, so if you have this list and you have all of your configuration files you can get a similar system going pretty quickly.

>Gentoo said it
Gentoo isn't a person and its creator is no longer involved. He maintains Funtoo instead. Gentoo is maintained by some kind of council, and I doubt the whole community agrees on a thing like that.

Thanks, I actually googled that question after typing it and found my answer.

# put all explicitly installed packages (minus AUR) into a file
# can be run as user
pacman -Qqe | grep -Fvx "$(pacman -Qqm)" > ./file

# reinstall from said file (deps will be pulled in automatically)
# must run as root
xargs pacman -S --needed --noconfirm < ./file

I should be fine now.

Having trouble installing Nvidia drivers. See the small half X on my second monitor? That's the limit that Nvidia drivers keep imposing on me.

Left monitor is set up as 1920x1080 and right is 1440x900. Set up using Nvidia settings. Screen0 and screen1 respectively. Why can I put my mouse over there but no programs? At least before I set up a second screen I could move programs over there. The orientation was wrong and the programs clipped. But now I can't do anything and it's still not occupying the full positions please help. I just wanted to monitor my gpu Temps for fuck sake.

is ther any verson of linux that is so what gui like windows server?

right now my server is running 2k3 becuase its a pentium 3
it hosts ftp with filezilla server
it hosts http pages with micrososft iis
it hosts http downloads with an application called hfs on another port
it also runs vpn

I like haveing an easy gui to do things. I have also used linux before but i gave up because i could not get the vpn to run at all and i was very confused and annoyed. It was like way to much to get to understand at once. I just want a vpn for my self so when i use public wifis my conection is encriptied and no one gets to see my passwords. oh and so i can get past them stupid fucking blocks

but i had my website and my file downloads working much easer with linux at .htacess files I actualy enjoy the fuck out of web 1.0. I did the whole linux configuration for apache and mysql

I hve tryed setting up ftp on my server but what happens is i get the whole root of my drive with any user i make and i do not want that at all.
i want an ftp for just my www root and then an ftp acounts for junk me and my frends wanna share

/g/ I've atleast enjoyed linux for its sablity and being able to easely make a web 1.0 website up super quick, hell out of the box even. I havent enjoyed a nice easy to use server gui. im disappointed at that to be honest.
If i had the power I would make a easy to use application or script that would alow any user to quickely set up all kinds of services that are typical for servers. well mainly just ftp, web, mail, timeserver, vpn,

I honestly use ftp and web more then any other server service.

Would it be a better choice over Ubuntu/Trisquel?
>>
>>51810130
So stable it's enrooted deep into the ground and stopped walking a long time ago. No seriously, good luck making any new, hip software work out of the box on debian. Half the stuff I use everyday comes from AUR and debian can't provide that. Also fuck apt

Do you even fucking now if linux-libre even works properly on your fucking computer you dumbass?
>>
>>51810172
Oh. I forgot that I hadn't responded to you yet. Personally I'd go with Trisquel because I am a massive freetard. Trisquel is supposed to be a pretty good distro with merits other than its commitment to FOSS, but I've never used it. The advantage of Debian, as I see it, is that any knowledge and experience gained will be more widely applicable, since Debian is a very common distro and lots of things are based on it. On the other hand, maybe you'd rather have diverse experience than widely applicable experience.

It doesn't sound like you could have mastered Gentoo, otherwise I'd tell you to install them both in a VM and explore a little to get a feel for the differences.

It probably doesn't matter much, ultimately. As the other anon somewhat rudely pointed out, linux-libre may not support some graphics and Wi-Fi hardware that depends on proprietary blobs. I've never had trouble with it, but I carefully pick hardware for Linux compatibility.
>>
>>51810240
I already know what computer I'm going to install it on you fucking prick and I know it works with trisquel.

literally a matter of personal preference.
You'd know that if you googled.

But noo, better ask stupid fucking questions that has been answered 6 gorillion times just to make it's actually personal preference and not anything else by accident.
>>
>>51810317
okay then how would i be able to share files with my frends with it being not on some stupid ass cloud site? FTP may seem weak but all we are tradeing is porn music and video games.there is no real need for security is there?
>>
>>51810097
shift+f2 in firefox and then type "screenshot --fullpage"
>>
Does using a terminal multiplexer use less resources than using n number of terminals ?
>>
>>51810352
FTP is totally fine for that, although I would at least try to us TLS, i.e. FTPS. You could also host your own cloud site with owncloud, but that is almost always overkill IMO
>>
>>51810385
if you're concerned with the amount of resourced used by multiple terminals use rxvt, it has a daemon/client functionality.
>>
>>51810399
owncloud is still useing another service. but my thing is i want a nice easy gui server like i have with windows filezilla server

is there no linux distros with simple server guis?
>>
>>51810352
You have a server, you can do whatever you want with it.
>>
>>51810361
Are you a wizard?
>even on palememe
>>
>>51810464
Owncloud is an open source web application. You can run it on your own web server if you want to.

I've never heard of a GUI for configuring web servers. It sounds stupid. plain text configuration files are easy to use. If you don't think so, then you are probably not advanced enough to deal with the security implications of Internet-facing network services.

I know i have a server ,but how the fuck is there no gui to configure things,
I want a gui to be able to edit things such as my ftp and everything i have that relates to my server needs
>>
>>51810519
I honestly do not care about the security risks of a server holding pirate materal. if it gets hacked or some shit, just format the bitch nothing of real importance is on it. you know.

Im not running some corpreate server and the company is planing world domination

I just would like a simple to use interface, or a simple fucking guide on how to do all this comand line shit, theres nothing simple out there for dumb shits like me
>>
>>51810519
I can't understand how you cant understand how its stupid to have a simple gui beable to make modifcations to a few text files.

its for the ones who do not understand what the fuck they are doing and so they can do it in a safe way
>>
>>51810686
why would you need a gui for editing text files?
>>
>>51810561
Editing plain text configuration files doesn't necessarily require use of the command line. You can edit them in a graphical editor if you want to, all though the editor will probably have to be running with root privileges, and will therefore probably have to be launched from the command line. You should be able to manage "sudo gedit httpd.conf" or whatever.

Every mature program comes with documentation on how to use its configuration files. Just read it.

For someone with your level of technical sophistication, if any computer on your local network can be compromised, then so can your router, and from there any of your other computers. You are begging to get yourself set up as an email spam bot or worse.

Update. I got to here. Base mosaic didn't do anything and neither did xinerama. Wallpaper goes on and a separate container is available for use but it's still giving me this unaccessible black bar even though everything is set up properly. The Dell is hooked up via vga to dvi-i adapter on the gpu end. Could this be a dsub resolution limit? Xrandr tells me only a single monitor is connected, my hdmi acer.

My bad on not specifying x screen.

But I got it. I had the layout set up properly but I didn't realize that my monitor was the issue. I use the auto center calibration on my monitor to move the display into the correct position. Never thought that would be an issue since it was positioned properly prior.

Use Windows on Laptop:

Use Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Elementary, Kali):

How do I fix this?

I've read online but found no solutions, it's driving me crazy.

you will have to know what kind of wifi chip you have it sounds like a broadcom chip, you will have to find the file needed and place it in the right folder then restart your system
