Hello, gentoomen. I have an old Nexus 7, 2011 version i believe and it is very slow. I googled around and there seems to be more people having the same problem and as per default every "tech expert" recommends resetting to factory defaults / updating firmware / updating the OS so i thought why not and did all of those. Who would have thought that absolutely nothing would be better with a clean slate?
Don't get me wrong, i do not expect such an old tablet to be fast but it shouldn't be slow as fuck without anything running on it.
Is there any good custom rom or something i could do to make it faster so i can use it for web viewing, comic books and movies without it pooping itself.

Yeah, pretty much any ROM should give you better performance.
My recommendation is to find an aosp based ROM, as that will probably be very lightweight and fast.

Bruteforce or dict - pick your preference in number of thousands of years you want to spend decrypting what is probably AES and money spent on electricity.

Does anyone find that modern laptops don't let you put new OSes on them, or even boot from a CD/USB?
I've fiddled with three computers of a different brand in three different cities and states, and NONE of them allow you to boot from CD/USB in the BIOS. They all had the option to, but no way to select it. HP and Acer.
Apparently, other have this same problem, and some have found ways to remedy it, but most can't. I've tried for hours, as well as trying some "remedies" that others have found successful, with no avail. Some on HP boards say that a BIOS "flaw" is in many of their new laptops that don't allow CD/USB booting.
I'm starting to think it's a mass conspiracy seeing as I've tried so many in DIFFERENT STATES. Anyone know of any reliable brands of modern laptops that are under $300 that allow you to boot from USB/CD and replace the OS?

I got a Kobo Glo a couple of years back.
It's pretty nice. I haven't finished more than like ~15 books with it though since I prefer books on real paper.
Main reason to get a Kobo instead of something like a kindle is that it seemed a bit more tinker-friendly and I would have had to import a Kindle if I wanted one.
If I were you I'd see if any big electronics store nearby have kindles, kobos and sony's out for display so that you can figure out which one you like best yourself.
I really hate how they messed up the kindle. why would I want a touch display...
