IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Been kinda poking around trying to find an answer. Guess i'll just ask here too.

My e6440 came with a wdc blue 1tb, the4 model number is WD10JPVX.

I am guessing the firmware has been fucked with because according to Western digital, the serial number is invalid, and rather than report a buffer size in crystal disk info, its showing total host reads and writes like an ssd would. This model isn't even an sshd model, so why would it even report a number like that? Is the smart data just fucked? Is it even safe to use?

I'm not entirely sure, for me I like the tactile feel but mostly I want the keyboard to be silent so I'm leaning towards Cherry reds.

Not important, think they'd be neat but I don't look at my keyboard.
>Previous/current keyboards
I've only gone through a few keyboards, two of them have lasted me for 10 years each, though I've had to swap some more used keys around
I got a g17 LED keyboard at one point but it only lasted me 6 months before the wiring broke in it. I'd like to do wireless as I don't want that problem again and I like to move around with it.
>>
1st for meme layouts are for autist
>>
just received a ducky zero w/ blues to replace my finally broken razer meme (also blues, last revision with genuine cherry switches)

The blues on the ducky are definitely more silent that the ones on the razer and have a pretty satisfying "tock", when bottoming out as opposed to a kind of rattle high pitched click on the razer.

So far I enjoy it

That said, the ducky zero literally has zero autist/meme/gamer features, I wonder why other companies haven't picked up that design and construction and made it a keyboard for normies.

After multiple KDE shill threads in past month I gave it a spin. I'm using Manjaro XFCE for few years so I decided to test out their KDE release. Fucking hell this is beautiful and snappy even on old c2d 2 GHz, 4GB RAM laptop. I like where Linux is heading, will test new Gnome too but I'll be installing KDE version of Manjaro for sure. What's your prefered KDE distro and why? Tips for new KDE user? Opinions on new versions of KDE and Gnome?

Thanks for the heads up, OP. I was planning on using Manjaro KDE when I buy a new desktop. The Xfce version is simply rock-solid.

The only tip for KDE I can give is to look up drop-down terminals. I remember there were at least two KDE-specifc ones. Yakuake was the name I think. Post more impressions.
>>
>>54001380
So far everything is snappy. no crashes. Browsing, watching a show and no issues. Like you said XFCE is rock solid but this is beautiful. Dolphin file options are incredible. I was about to bitch about the only cosmetic flaw I've found and that is the bottom panel being too "fat" but one click on the setting button and height is trimmed. Will look into drop down terminals but I usually run Terminator, it's comfy.
>>
Well Alt+Space to start krunner and then just remove the start button. No reason to have it then krunner does the same thing.

If you don't like plasma/ the kde desktop you can just install XFCE and replace the xfwm with kwin and that way have most of the KDE experience.

I did half of Codecademy Angular course and it already made me sick. That feel when it is kinda chaotic and I actually have to spend some time on it, and on the other hand, it is a meme technology and I'm just learning how to do something I already know in a new (somewhat better) way.

Welcome to /flt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

If my computer is sub par, can I still use a vive for the non-games and simple stuff like virtual theaters or vr YouTube videos?

I'm using a GTX 760 and a i5. When I did a "vr ready" vive check it said my graphics card was underpowered but when I did a oculus check it said the graphics card was fine but my processor want good enough.

Also, do I need to set up the cameras and shit if I'm doing that? It seems like a pain in the ass for using it for such simple stuff.

Thanks for the help in advance

Women in tech are underpaid. How do we fix this?
76 posts and 14 images submitted.
>>
>>54010271
Make them do the same amount of work with the same amount of expertise at the same age and produce the same quality product.
>>
>>54010332
yeah you're not hearing the OP's point; those things are all happening and given all those things they're getting paid less.
>>
>>54010271
Stop hiring them. No women in tech, therefore not underpaid. Problem solved.

How do I stop my program code from quickly becoming a clusterfuck of a design?

It always starts out simple and clean but ends up unmanageable with stray hardcoded hotfixes .
53 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
you need to be able to see more abstract patterns when you need to hardcode a fix. also a "hotfix" means a fix you introduce without swapping out the code/component, and something tells me you think it means something else.
>>
>>54010084
No idea. I just start making a clusterfuck and along the way better and more ideal design patterns just come to me when writing code.
>>
>>54010084
Program more.
You have not yet reached the zen of programming.
