Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Should I rely on JavaScript to adapt my website to different screen sizes and platforms, or should I use @media instead?

Also, to what extent should my website rely on JavaScript?
And is adding sounds on button click a good idea?
>>
>>52134452
Use as little js as possible. Resize with media queries. Do not add sound to button clicks.
>>
>>52134470
I would have to write media queries for all the possible platforms and screen resolutions, while a little JavaScript could make everything adaptable on any platform and screen resolution, though.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Why did x86 surpass MIPS?
57 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
more winfags = more money
>>
>>52167471
Because when it came to powerful processors, the only ones available were PPC and x86.

Microsoft chose to support x86, so naturally x86 became the dominant desktop platform in that regard.

Apple chose PPC at first, but when it became clear that IBM was not going to improve the energy efficiency, they switched to x86 to improve their laptops.

With both Microsoft and Apple allowing this piss poor architecture to dominate all their computer platforms, we finally had the x86 dominance.

because intel had/has a ton of money and it turned out that shitty instruction sets don't really matter at all

also most historic RISC designs are really memory inefficient
